U Print is a shop on the Manchester Uni north campus in the Barnes Wallis building (the 2nd students union) and it is a brilliant place to go to get any work or poster type things printed or bound.
I used it for the first time this year getting my dissertation soft bound and I have to say I received brilliant service.
I called before I went and checked the time it would take and the prices. I thought that the costs for printing seemed quite high so decided to print it at home and then take the printed loose leaves in and get them bound. I got 3 90 page books soft bound with my name and course in gold lettering down the side, and it cost £13.50, so £4.50 each which i don't think is bad.
It was stressful printing it at home as the inevitable running out of ink and chewing up paper took place and it was only ink jet printed but my friend paid about £20 to have each of hers printed at the shop. They do laser print though which does look really good so if you have the cash and want to make a really good impression or only want a few things printed, it could be worth it.
On the website, I think the niftiest thing is the 'queue cam'. This is a webcam which shows you the waiting area of the shop so you can see how busy it is. This is a really good feature but I also found that when I called them, they could tell me how busy it was and they sort of knew the dissertation/thesis deadlines around the time and told me that if I went just after I called, I should be fine.
I went just before a lecture at about 9.30 and expected to go back at 12 after the lecture to pick it up but to bind all 3 literally just took 3 minutes. They did the lettering and checked it with me and sorted everything so well. If you do have to leave it, they can text you to tell you when its ready - all you have to do is leave your number and ask them to.
In the shop on the counter they had examples of each of the different types of binding which was really good and they sort of know what the standards for different schools is. They helped me to pick the best one and it did (I think) look really good.
They were just really friendly in general and helpful and they even could lend me sellotape and a stapler and pritt-stick when I needed them!
If you take your work to be printed too you can load it from all the main formats on their computers in the shop. You can also take your own laptop and send it by wifi.
Another thing is that colour prints cost more but if you send a document with some colour pages and some black and white, they said they would be able to send the different pages to different printers to charge you the least possible.
I would definitely reccommend them for printing and binding but they do loads of other stuff and there is a lot more info on their website: http://www.u-print.com/
