Advantages: Lose weight, feel great
Disadvantages: You do have to change your diet lol
What is it?
Weight Watchers is a group which is run by somebody who has previously attended, and lost weight, with weight watchers who undergo's training to become a leader/guide.
What happend?
When you attend a ww meeting you will initially need to fill in a form about yourself including name/address/height etc. All of these things will help to assess a suitable weight loss goal for you. You will be privately weighed and have an opportunity to discuss your long and short term goals with your new leader.
After this initial weigh you will have the opportunity to stay to the meeting where the leader will talk about subjects relevant to weight loss which can be just a talk, a discussion or a focused activity. This lasts around 30mins and is the place to gather tips and learn about what works for other people.
At the end...
At the end of the first meeting you will stay for an additional 10-15 mins to discuss the programme material with your leader. She or he will tell you about the points programme and filling foods and show you what you will need to do next! They will also explain about the incentives you have to keep working such as losing 10% and 20% of your starting weight and gaining small awards for 7lb lost and 1 stone markers.
My Experience/views...
Weight watchers groups can vary. I have been to some with poor leaders and my advice would be to get on-line at www.weightwatchers.co.uk and change groups. A good leader will be supportive and have time for you. They will engage you in the meeting and make you feel motivated towards your goals. Especially when your losing that initial motivation. They will never chastise you or make you feel bad and will encourage you to attend even if you have gained weight as that is the time you need the support the most! Find a good leader.
The other members are important too, but a motivating leader will make this easier. A group where ideas flow freely and the members interact to help push each other along will make a big difference to your motivation and ultimately your losses!
Cost
WW meetings can be expensive, around £5 but if you sign up to monthly pass which is 17.50 per month it averages 4.44 per class and also adds motivation to attend as you have already paid. You receive a card every month which has an expiry date on it and at your meeting you jump to the express queue and sign in with name and the number on your current card. I used monthly pass and it is the best way forward. Another benefit of monthly pass is free membership to the whole of the weight watchers site including tools like weight tracker and recipe builder and points calculator with a huge database of foods at the fingertips.
With the ww site the forum are is free for any person to join and if you do not feel you need the support of a group you can follow the ww plan using the tips from members on the forum. You can also join on-line for a cost which is seperate to signing up for free forum access.
Weight watchers works if you follow it. The newest plan incorporates your daily points with foods which will keep you feeling fuller for longer. These include those high in fibre and relatively low gi. The focus on exercise is also increasing and you can earn bonus points through exercise which you can bank for faster weight loss or spend on additional food.
With the economy as it is a fee-paying weight-loss class may feel like a luxury you cannot afford in which case i would point you to the website for free advice :)
Summary: Great for weight loss
