Advantages: Good support from leaders, Plenty of products on sale, Easy to follow

Disadvantages: Fee expensive

When you first step onto the scales at a local Weight Watchers meeting, you are admitting to yourself that you need to lose weight, in order to look and feel good again.

What do you look for in a diet?? Well the answer to that is a well balanced diet, which gives you all the nutriants that you need in a normal day, without going hungry. As none of us want to be hungry during the day.

I think most of us have tried different fad diets over time, which include a no fat diet, where you are only allowed soup, fruit and veg, and therefore losing over half a stone in just a week, cereal diet, cabbage diet, milkshake diet. These all claim for fabulous weight losses in no time at all, but do they really work??? For a short period of time yes. However, if you are looking to lose a lot of weight and/or keep it off, surely the best way is to eat sensibly.

The weekly cost of Weight Watchers is £4.50, but it is somewhat cheaper for people over 60. The registration cost is usually around £9.00, however if you look on their website or in local newspapers and magazines, there is usually free registration.

At weight watchers, it is purely based on a points system which is as follows:-

8 - 10 stones = 18 points
10- 12 stones = 20 points
12 - 14 stones = 22 points
14 - 16 stones = 23 points

These are the points, which are allocated to women, with men being allowed extra points due to the extra calories they need.

In the advert they state that 'no food is a sin' which is absolutely correct, as you can eat whatever you like whether it's chocolate, crisps, pastry etc... just so long as it fits into your daily points allowance you can eat whatever you like.

You get set a daily allowance as above, depending on your weight. But you can gain extra points by exercising (half an hour of skipping = 3 points), which can be used for any extras that you might want, as you are allowed to either s
ave 4 points off your daily allowance each day to save up to 12 points for extra treats you may want, or you can do the same via exercise. However, if you don't use the extra 'bonus' points, you will lose weight faster.

The first week you join, you get weighed in and given your week 1 book (You will be given 1 book every week for the first 10 weeks), and the leader will discuss with you on your first weigh in, what weight you would like to aim for, which is usually 1 to 2 stone to begin with.

The first week of the diet is a detox week, whereby you can expect to lost anything up to 7lbs, after that you plan all your own meals and start counting the points. The meaning of the detox is basically to kick start the system, and clear out any impurities before you start the diet.

You are given an option as to whether you wish to stay to the meeting (which lasts for about half an hour), but if you decide to stay, you will find that the meetings are very informative, with lots of advice and support from your leader and other members also.

At each meeting there is a variety of goodies that you can buy, which include shopping guide (lists points for all foods), eating out guide, latest weight watcher magazine, points calculator, cookery books, chocolate bars and sweets.

I personally have been going to Weight Watches for just over 7 months now and have lost just over three and a half stone, yet I am still some way from my 'goal weight'. However, I will keep on perservering until the day I get on the scales and finally reach target.

The diet doesn't claim to be easy, as if you want to reach your 'goal weight' you will need lots of will power and determination in order to do so, as without these you will never make, as I know from past experiences.
