I like to try the top and latest fragrances and aftershaves and knowing this My brother picked up a bottle of this for my Christmas present. It's the first time I have had this particular Calvin Klein scent but I have had a few other CK scents in the past. I had liked Contradiction whenever I had smelt it on someone or had tried it from a tester in Boots or some other fragrance store. Contradiction has been around since 1998 and is one of Calvin Klein's biggest scents for men and of course like the others in the range they have a Contradiction for women too. I had seen some decent deals around for Contradiction which is what tends to happen with the more established fragrances when new ones come in. You can easily find the fragrance whether eau de toilette or aftershave like this one for around £15 for a 50ml bottle.
This is an excellent scent and the aftershave aspect works well, leaving your skin feeling refreshed and smooth without that nasty "ahhhhhh" stinging feeling that some aftershaves can give you. The aftershave opens with a sharp fruity feel and progresses with a slight muskier feel with also a little woody nature in there somewhere. The fragrance certainly closes with a much woodier scent and lasts for a decent time compared to other cheaper aftershaves.
Key Lime, Grove Clementine, Frosted Leaves, Sage, Lavender
These notes open the aftershave well and give the tangy and quite sharp fruitiness of the fragrance. These typically last a couple of hours before blending into the more musky Middle notes.
Cardamom, Coriander, Nutmeg, Milled Peppercorns
These give the fragrance it's slightly nutty middle. They blend together well for a decent scent and last for another two to three hours before we close the scent with the base notes.
Bubinga wood, Cashmeran, Vetiver, Patchouli, Sandalwood.
These give the aftershave it's Woody kick which gives the scent a different aspect. I like the scent which leaves you at the end. It's a nice woody close.
This is an excellent aftershave which really works well post shave or even clean shaven. The design of the bottle makes it stand out from other alternatives and the scent should also appeal to many who like a nice fruity fragrance with a touch of woody notes. I would recommend you at least check this aftershave out as it is one of the best from Calvin Klein and of course there are some great deals to be found. I haven't decided whether or not to get this one again when I have run out but it is certainly a contender. Give it a spray next time you are in a fragrance store. Ideal if you prefer a spray rather than an after shave balm or gel.
I was very pleasantly surprised to receive the Calvin Klein Contradiction aftershave for Christmas from my relatives, as I didn't expect the product to come within our £20 budget we spend on each other each year. Priced at around the £18 mark is the 100ml bottle, with an overly tall 'cap'. This is becoming commonplace with all types of fragrances these days, and the visible section of the bottle gives away that the aftershave is indeed a kind of lavender colour. The packaging is very simple, but it works well for the product, and I can't say I am put off by the design.
The aftershave itself is applied using the pump spray on the top of the glass bottle, and so is simple to apply. The first whiff I notice is very fresh and I can certainly sense the lime and tangerine notes instantly. There is also meant to be sage, coriander, nutmeg and pepper here aswell, but I can't immediately pick those scents out. The base note is said to be sandalwood, and the amber musk which is left on my skin works well with the aforementioned scents. I am more than satisfied with the whole experience and the fragrance of the aftershave would probably suit a broad range of men. The scent is quite light, but you can sense its presence when you are around someone wearing it, so it isn't muted.
For the price I will definitely be buying another bottle for myself when I get through this one. 100ml for £18 is fantastic value and Calvin Klein are well known for their affordable and very simple fragrances. This is another product of theirs that impresses me.
**Why I Bought "Contradiction"**
The latest addition to my ever increasing collection of Aftershaves and fragrances is Contradiction by Calvin Klein. I didn't want or actually need another fragrance but as this was one of the bargains offered during Amazons recent Black Friday sales I snapped up a bottle at a rock-bottom price and thought that if nothing else it would make a handy Christmas present to give to a family member this year. I had no intention of keeping it I have to admit but when the package arrived I was curious as to how it smelt so 'sampled' a little, cheeky? Perhaps but I couldn't resist.
This did prove to be a mistake though but a good one as far as I'm concerned as I liked what I tried so much I decided to keep the bottle for myself instead of giving it away.
**How it is described**
Launched in 1998 Calvin Klein's Contradiction sits amongst a plethora of fragrances for men created by the well known fashion designer. It is described as being "The essence of modernity, strength and power. The clean, crisp lines of the bottle combined with the warm sensuality of the fragrance tell a story of contradiction; of refined contemporariness with unexpected soul" which is the usual overly-wordy pretentiousness you find describing products of this nature and something I generally ignore when it comes to selecting an aftershave or EDT spray for myself. What I look for in an aftershave is how it makes my skin feel once applied and how it actually smells, so what do I think?
Contained in an understated slate grey box with silver lettered highlights Contradiction looks like a classy product, the bottle itself is rectangular with smoothed corners and is encased by a long metallic cover. Removing the outer case proved to be difficult the first time I attempted to lift it off as it seemed to grip the sides of the bottle very tightly; however once off the transparent glass bottle reveals a fragrance which has a slight blue tinge to it. As this is a 'splash-on' aftershave lotion rather than an EDT spray there is a screw top lid on the bottle which is easy enough to remove and once off the aroma from the awaiting scent is immediately noticeable.
**How does it smell**
My initial thoughts upon first smelling the aftershave were positive; the immediate smell is light and fruity and reminded me of similar products from Paul Smith and Ed Hardy. Taking a little of the liquid between my fingers and applying it to my neck releases a burst of recognisable lime and tangerine notes which are striking and invigorating. As the formulation of aftershave is different to EDT it is designed to be applied to the face and neck once it has been shaved and tends to be more potent than its cheaper counterparts. The adage "less is more" applies to any aftershaves and Contradiction is no different, usually I am quite liberal when it comes to applying fragrances but do find with this that you don't need that much to be able to detect all the different notes it presents.
Once the initial burst of flavour has had chance to develop the middle notes of pepper, coriander and nutmeg are evident. It is a warming fragrance I have to say and one which is attractive on my skin, I'm usually drawn to deep musky scents as a rule and Contradiction includes all of my favourite ingredients in its mixture. Sandalwood and Musk make up the bottom notes which are the ones that tend to linger the most and these are the ones that I can detect after around 30 minutes. Similar to my all-time favourite fragrance, A*Men Contradiction has a real richness to it which I enjoy and find that it also has great staying power with an application on a morning seeing me all the way through the day without the need for a top-up.
I do think that this is a scent which would suit the majority of ages but is perhaps a little mature for very young skin, the muskiness and deep woody notes may be a little overpowering if over applied so I would advise caution if using this yourself. The aftershave itself does lotion the skin on my neck and provides a soothing sensation to any razor rash I may get after shaving although like similar products will sting if applied to any nicks or over-shaved areas. Different skin types react differently to aftershaves and EDT's but I can advise that there is no greasiness to Contradiction, it doesn't feel heavy or sticky on my skin nor does it provoke an allergic reaction on me. My neck area can become sore after shaving but apart from a slight stinging sensation there are no adverse affects when applied so I would assume this would be suitable for the majority of people.
On balance I do consider the name of this aftershave to be appropriate; the "Contradiction" itself I assume is an indication of how the scent develops over time. On first application you would expect this to be a light and subtle fragrance and one which would have little long term longevity but as it begins to settle down it releases its more powerful notes which do remain noticeable and stay on your skin for hours after its application. For a spur-of-the-moment purchase I have been very impressed by this aftershave and I can easily see it becoming a new favourite which I would continue to buy once my bottle has run out.
I paid just £9.45 for my bottle of Contradiction which is outrageously cheap, usually the 100ml Aftershave retails for around £30.00 but can be found for around £19.00 from places such as fragrancedirect or cheapsmells.com. For a Christmas present for your other half this could well be a winner this year and one much appreciated by him, if he likes aftershaves which are deep and long lasting then this could well appeal. Definitely recommended by me getting the thumbs up for its packaging, bottle design and most important of, how it actually smells and feels on my skin.
Five stars, thanks for reading my review.
