Gillette Venus & Olay was on special so I thought I would give it a try. I enjoy trying new things. It almost feels like I was being punished for trying to be more adventurous. I have always liked Gilette Venus and am a avid user of the Venus razor blade range, but this is a team that never should have got together.
> The Razor Handle <
The razor handle is not bad at all, it is your classic Gillette razor. It is easy to handle and smooth and sleek looking.
> The Razor Blade <
Before I start I will make my positive notes on the razor blade because Venus as a brand is good. It has 5 blades so it does give you a close shave.
The issue I have with is the moisture bars. When using the razor it leaves a horrible, sticky residue like snail slime which feels horrible. After that you are left with the same residue that you need to try and get off the razor before continuing your shave, not that that makes any difference.
The worst part of all that is not only are you left feeling like Gary the snail the razor barely lasts because the bars disappear in the blink of an eye. I think mine lasted me just about under a month and that was pushing it, one didn't even last me 3 weeks! Once the bars have gone the razor is completely useless so you end up having to fork out more money for more razors.
> Value <
As with all razors you can get these for a small price with the handle for about £5 depending on where you go. The razors on their own are about £12.
> Overall <
If I were you I would stick to just good ol' Venus, Gillette Venus & Olay will be a waste of your time and money.
Shaving always seems like such a chore especially for a woman having to do it on such a regular basis. I always tend to buy razors that are cheapish and or on offer. This razor is large than your normal disposable razor but it's just god damn great. I can normally pick this up for just £4 from my local savers store and you can get the razor blades from ASDA, Wilkinson's, Boots - pretty much all over really however do shop for the lowest price you can get! The product is well packaged however can be a bit of a tackle to remove and you may end up with a cut before you can even get it out. The great thing about this razor is that it has a moisture bar attached really I tend to think of it as a mini bar of soap attached and creates lather on your skin whilst shaving so sometimes when I really can't be bothered to apply shaving gel I just use the razor and astonishingly I don't get no red bits, cuts or rashes it's just easy as that. Normally with disposable and cheap razors you would tend to do strokes on the same area for all of the hairs to be removed but not with this one - one smooth glide and the hairs are gone and this is why they have 5 blades on the razor which makes it quick and easy. I have used this product for months now (buying 1 a month) it was cheap to buy the full razor rather than just the blades, I wouldn't go back to using any other razor unless this one was discontinued. My skin always feels silky smooth after using this razor and overall just a great razor!
--- Introduction: Why I brought this product ---
I usually use disposable razors as I find the cost of replacing blades on razors is so expensive and generally not that good, it is cheaper to just buy some own brand disposable ones, which do a good enough job. However, the only problem with disposable razors is that they can leave your skin a little irritated and dry. This can be easily resolved by moisturising after shaving, but this is a little time consuming if you are in a rush. When I saw this product whilst I was shopping I was drawn in by the fact that the blade on this razor is surrounded by Olay moisturising bars. I love Olay products and the thought of having a razor that would moisturise as well as shave was very appealing as it would cut a whole step out of my shower routine.
This was on offer in Asda when I brought it, at 3 for £10 for the razor and one blade. I thought this was a fair offer seeing as the blades are supposed to last more than one shave and decided that if this product really did mean I didn't need to moisturise after or use shaving cream before then it would be worth paying a little bit more for it.
--- The Product ---
This razor is designed by Gillette and is part of their Venus line. The razor itself has five blades which claim to provide an extremely close shave. The blade is surrounded by Olay 'moisture bars'. There is one yellow/golden colour bar and one white bar. These are designed to 'release skin conditioners that lock in your skin's moisture' to help combat dryness. The moisture bars also contain a vanilla scent which is similar to the scent that a lot of Olay products have. I was quite impressed when I opened the packaging and saw how big the moisture bars were. I was expecting them to be fairly small, but they are each almost as big and the 5 razor blades.
The structure of the handle is very sturdy. It is made from a flexible plastic that allows you to it slightly, which is useful for when you are shaving the sides and backs of your legs and other hard to reach areas. The handle is covered in a squashy rubber material and has many ridges that allow for an easy grip. This easy grip handle is very effective and even when the handle is wet it is easy to keep a good hold of it, meaning that you can have a very controlled shave and you don't risk slipping with the razor and nipping yourself.
The razor also comes with an in shower hook which sticks to tiles or glass. This is handy if like me, you are always losing things or you get into the shower and find that you have left your razor somewhere else!
--- My Opinion ---
I am in two minds about this razor. I haven't used an expensive razor for a long time and as soon as I used this, my legs felt amazingly smooth and I have to say this razor does give you an incredibly close shave. The razor itself bends independently from the handle which means you can easily maneuver it over your legs and into the harder to reach areas which is much easier than when you are using a disposible razor. However, I feel that whilst this is obviously what you want in a razor, the main reason you would pick this razor over another similar one is the Olay moisturising effects.
This is where I have to say this razor really fell down for me. As soon as the moisture bars got wet they became very sticky and when I removed the razor away from my leg there was a trail of white slime attached to my leg and the razor. This was annoying as every time I put the razor to my skin there was a slimy trail and it ended up covering my hands and legs which wasn't particularly appealing. Also, as the moisture bar was sliming all over my legs, it was rapidly diminishing in size. By the time I had finished my shower, almost half of the moisture bars had been used! This was very disappointing, especially as this was not a cheap razor and I would expect to be able to use it more than once with the moisture bars in tact!
My legs did feel very smooth and didn't feel dry after I had used this razor, but I'm not sure how much of this was down to the moisture bars. I personally think that my legs felt smooth because the razor blades were much gentler than the ones I normally use, rather than because the moisture bars had done an excellent job. I also, still moisturised after my shower because whilst my legs felt better than normal, they still felt a little irritated from the shave.
The price of this razor is where my main problem lies. I didn't pay a great deal for the actual razor, but normally it retails at around £10 which is a lot for a plastic razor and one blade. The replacement cartridges are also around £10.99 for 3 or £20.99 for 6. Considering that you can buy a pack of 10 disposables for a couple of pounds, this is a massive price increase. I personally feel that the improvement in the quality of the shave was substantial and seeing as you can use each blade a few times, I would be prepared to pay out for a Gillette razor. However, there are cheaper options and I don't feel that this product is the right one for me. The moisture bars seem a waste to me, they are not particularly effective and don't last long at all. I reckon you would only be able to get two uses out of each cartridge if you stopped using it once the moisture bars ran out, which makes them very expensive!
I personally feel that whilst I haven't found a product that saves me time because I still need to moisturise after using this razor, I have found out how great more expensive razors can be and I have been amazed by the improvement in the quality of the shave. This product may not be all it is cracked up to be in terms of moisturising, but it is a quality razor and it has surpassed my expectations on that front. I am a convert to using a more expensive razor and I will be trying some other Gillette products, but I won't be repurchasing this one.
When I first saw this advertised I was very eager to try it. I often suffer from dry skin on my legs and find some razors too harsh to use at all. To then hear about this Venus & Olay razor with moisture bars making it perfect for sensitive skin, it was like a dream come true. Sadly, it was not to be..
Boots was having an offer in which I was able to purchase the razor for£10.99 and receive a pack of 3 replacement blades for free. At the time I thought this to be a good deal if it were to be the perfect razor. The first time of using was a welcome experience. Upon opening the packaging, I was surprised with the scent of what smelled like a honey and milk shower cream I'd bought ages ago. Also, as soon as the razor touched the water it began to later straight away, and smoothly glided over my skin. No problems what so ever. Unfortunately this didn't last very long. After just two weeks of use, both moisture bars were almost gone. By the third week there just strips of plastic where the moisture bars used to be.. I thought this to be quite disappointing, especially as the blades themselves still had plenty of use left in them.
Another problem I had with the venus & Olay razor was that, for some reason, it just didn't seem to provide as close a shave as my previous razor, and was twice the price! Furthermore, though it didn't give me any razor cuts, it didn't exactly prevent my legs from becoming dry. I did have such high hopes for this and even though I've only used two of the four blades I received when I got this, I doubt I will be purchasing any more when I've used them all. For the expensive price just for the razor alone, you would expect it to not only leave your legs ridiculously smooth (especially when a razor half the cost can), but also have the moisture bars it so heavily promotes, last longer than a couple of weeks. I didn't understand why they targeted this at people with sensitive skin, when the only thing that lasts is the actual blades.
Sorry Venus & Olay but this really did let me down, and I think I'll stick to the cheaper venus razors.
I'm prone to shaving rash and this has changed that. My legs are silky and no bumps! The strips of lotion work fantastically, the only two problems I have is that the lotion bars run out very quickly and they are expensive to replace, I still think that the performance outweighs the cons though so I will still keep buying this product
I picked up this version of the Gillette razor from amazon when it was first released. For years I had used the Gilette Venus razor and simply replaced the heads when they wore after 1-2 months. I was really happy with the Gilette Venus but did find that my legs felt dry after using in the shower.
However, after just one use with the Olay version I found it worked as well as the venus but left my legs feeling soft and supple. Similar to if I had moisturised. Of course this part of the product was fantastic although after maybe 2 weeks of using daily I found the ribbon of Olay which surrounded the blades had nearly all worn down already. After this Olay ribbon had gone it was just like using a disposable razor and my legs felt drier than from the Venus. However, I did purchase several new heads to replace the old from Wilkinson. For anyone who has never used a Gilette the wand/hand retracts from the head so you can replace when needed - this is a great part of the product. Although, I was slightly annoyed when it came to purchasing some more Olay heads as they were so expensive. I think for 5 I payed £13 in Wilkinson.
They did however work really great again but lasted just a short while. For anybody thinking about purchasing this razor I would recommend it for the fact is really moisturises your shaved area but I would say be prepared to have to pay a lot of money for additional heads quite regularly. I would too like the add that the Olay Ribbon when drying off sticks to wherever you have left it so be really careful about that. Personally myself I have returned to the venus for price reasons but definitely if you have the money go for the Olay..
I recently took this razor on holiday with me and it's one of the best manual razors I have used. Obviously on holiday you want really nice smooth legs that last for a long time when you are hanging around at the pool and wearing short summer dresses so this really was a great razor for my holiday which I am continuing to use now.
This Venus razor is said to helps replenish your skin's moisture while you shave close. It gives you the shaving experience of Gillette Venus with Olay moisturisation."
The Razor is really well shaped in my opinion and I find that the angle of the head hits my leg in the perfect position, meaning I can get a really straight and close shave without having to always readjust my razor. I find this especially helpful when it comes to my knee and around my ankle and I hardly ever scrap or nick my skin or draw blood which can be rather annoying and unsightly. The handle has a soft grip to it so it never slips out of my hand whilst I am shaving and also I do not get a cramped hand from gripping too hard either. The blade head pivots and moves too so again it goes over those really hard bits on the leg and shaves them really well.
I really love the addition of Olay to this razor. According to the information the, "Olay Moisture Bars help lock-in moisture to your skin for less dryness, and with every smoothing stroke." All you have to do to get the moisture to really kick in is to run it under the tap or shower to get it moist and then when you shave your legs you get this really nice bit of Olay that goes onto your skin first to smooth and moisturise it. I never get red marks or shaving burn after using this razor and I can use it in the shower with just plain water and no other shaving foam needed. This was a great advantage on holiday as it meant I didn't have to bring lots of different bottles with me, I could just have the razor and know I would end up with soft legs.
A really nice razor that I recommend.
One of the big bug bears of my beauty regime is hair removal - I can't afford regular waxes (and can't get my head round at home waxing kits) and when I shave I break out into an itchy red rash. Therefore, I am always on the lookout for good razors and shaving gel that will minimise the damage done to my legs and underarms which is why I came to try this razor. In the past I have had issues with using razors with added moisteriser as they just don't last long enough but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with this one.
***What you get***
Well according to Gillette's website:
* 5 razor blades get Venus close
* Olay Moisture Bars release skin conditioners to help lock in skin's moisture for less dryness
* No need for separate shave cream
* VanillaCrème scent
* SoftGrip® handle for confident control
* Shower Hook for convenient, in-shower storage
* Easy-to-change cartridges
Basically it is like a standard Gillette razor but with the addition of Olay moisture bars which are supposed to moisturise the area you are shaving.
The heads are also interchangeable with other Gillete razors so if you have one of those kicking about you can just buy new heads.
***What I thought of the razor***
I have to say that out of all the razors I have used this is my favourite - that said it's still not perfect but it is better than most.
The idea is that when you shave the moisturising bars lather up replacing the need for shaving gel/cream. The bars themselves are quite generous (for example I used the Wilkinson sword hydro silk razor and that only had a few dots of moisturising gel which ran out very quickly) and they do last a long time although when they get near the end they do tend to drop off but only when there is a tiny bit less and by that time I am ready for new heads because the blades are blunt anyway. Although one thing I did find that because the blades don't have a case it doesn't travel well at all as it leaves a sticky mess in your washbag but that was my fault for travelling with it.
When you use the razor you can feel the Olay bars on your skin and that and the five blades smooth over my skin well and I have never cut myself when using this razor which may be more to do with my technique then the razor but it does prove that the blades are nice and sharp and that the razor itself it easy to use. The moisturiser itself smoothes onto the skin and feels quite silky when on which makes a change from many razors I have used which quite frankly hurt. Afterwards my legs do still itch a bit and do still have to moisturise but the reaction is nowhere near as bad as it is with other razors which for me is a vast improvement. I have had some razors where my legs actually itch and look blotchy all day after shaving and with this razor the bad reaction goes down after about five minutes which is a massive improvement. If you don't get the same reaction to shaving as I do this razor will feel great and quite luxurious and if you do trust me it's an improvement. Underarm it works well too and gives a nice clean shave.
As for whether you need shower girl or not well I am not convinced either way to be honest - so for this review I shaved one leg without shaving gel and one with and there wasn't loads of difference. The leg without shaving gel was a bit itchy for about a minute longer but the reaction even without shaving gel is better than most razors with. But for me I won't dry shave again as poor legs prefer it but again if you have normal reactions to shaving then you may not need it but best to try with both.
This for me is the biggest downside to this product as it's not cheap as it has an RRP of £10.99 for the razor, and £10.99 for 3 blades (however, they do often have offer on in Boots and Superdrug) so it is a lot more expensive than other Gillette razors. Therefore, if you don't react badly when shaving I would buy something else but if you do so far it's the best option I have found but still not perfect hence the 4 stars.

I originally bought this razor reduced from £10.98 to £5.58 from Wilkinsons. The packaging looked glamorous and the promising combination of the trusty brands, Venus and Olay, convinced me to purchase it.
The moisturising bars feel SO luxurious on the skin and the 5 blades result in a close, smooth shave. I particularly liked not having to fuss around with shaving cream for the first few uses while the moisturising bars were intact. However, this really was just a few uses as they were eroded down and used up within around 5-6 uses of the razor, which was disappointing considering the price.
after 5-6 uses, the Venus and Olay shaving cream came in handy but is not quite as luxurious or moisturising with the blade alone.
The blades, to repurchase, are £10.98 for 4. This is fairly pricey, more so than other Venus blades, but I would recommend them highly if quality is valued over price, or for a luxury treat eg. on a holiday abroad when your legs will be out a lot!
I picked up this razor a while ago in Boots half price. I was looking for a new razor and I love Olay products, so I thought I would give this razor a go. I paid around £5.50 for the razor, which came with a shower holder, and one razor head. This is a brilliant price for this razor as it is an amazing razor, it just really doesn't last long enough!
This razor has 5 blades, and at the top and bottom of the blades is like a strip of soap. The soap bars are quite thick and you wouldn't think this would make so much difference but it really does. When you use this razor, you have to wet the soap slightly first, but then it just glides across your skin so effortlessly, you cannot feel the blades on your skin at all. It feels as if you are just rubbing soap on your legs, but when you feel you skin afterwards, it is so smooth and soft, not spiky at all. It gives just a close and smooth shave, considering you cannot feel the blades at all. I was really impressed the first time I used it, I didn't think I would ever use another razor ever again!
This razor does give a really smooth finish, and it is so quick and easy to use too. Shaving with this razor when you first use it is just effortless, however after about 3 uses, the soap bars just start to break off, or don't work as well as they get used up. They do not last a week, if shaving every single day. It's a shame that the soap part doesn't last, but when the soap is all used up you can use the razor normally and it still does give a nice close shave, but you can really tell how much the Olay soap bars moisturise your skin, as you can really tell a difference.
These replacement heads are so expensive, I paid £10.99 for 3 in Boots, and they do not last long enough at all to keep paying this amount of money for them. I like to shave often, and I am just going through the heads too quickly, it works out too expensive to use this razor, even though I love it, and it is one of the best I have used. The actual handle is really easy to hold too and easy to use.
To store this razor is a bit messy, the soap tends to get suck to the side of the bath whilst drying out, so I have to put it in a pot to dry. This razor is brilliant, it gives an amazingly close shave, leaves your skin so smooth and really soft, and I have not experienced any rash or cuts from this razor either. The soap has never irritated my skin, it just really moisturises and I wish this was cheaper, but unfortunately I won't be purchasing again, it's too expensive for the amount I use it!
If your looking for a quality razor without the nicks and scrapes this is the one for you!...Bought this the other day as i've seen the advert around and found its so far its awesome!!.. its a lovely golden yellow shade...perfect for the summer!....aswell as being well made and sturdy with a good long handle!.....it has a flexiable head for all those angles, corners and akward bits on legs and armpits!....after using i did indeed feel luxurious!...you can see the moisture lather on your skin right after using!!!....
its got these two white moisture bars that are loaded with olay moisturising goodness that also are really good at protecting your skin as you shave!...it was great to use without that worry! after using i could feel the moisture on my legs...a rich silky feeling!...I am curious though that after lets say the 5th use if the moisture bars will be as good and have as much moisture as they do now...
I would recommend this razor to a friend as is a great way of moisturing your skin as you shave!....as you do not need to use a shaving balm prior!...which is a great money saver!!!...
only downside is the razor its self is cheap but the blades are pricey so if your not a long term user of a razor this may not be the one for you.
..but if your after a new multi-task product give it a try and see for yourself!...its great while it lasts!
I have always used the Gillette Venus range on my legs, underarms and bikini region. I use Olay on my face and when I saw that they had combined with Gillette I had to try them. I was a bit taken aback by the price, however I usually pay more for the Gillette brand, £10.99 is a bit much I thought but decided I'd see if it was worth the extra pennies. It was!
I suffer from psoriasis which causes my skin to be easily irritated, the large moisture Olay bars either side of the blades largely reduced my irritation, the best it has been for a long time. It left my legs well shaven with a smooth finish. I had no itching or stinging I was comfortable and happy with the results.
I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who has trouble with dry or easily irritated skin. And to top it off the blue and gold of the bar are quite nice as well.
I noticed this as the newest addition to the Venus range in my supermarket and thought it was worth giving it a try. The packaging looked very glamourous and inviting.
However, the price tag for one razor head and a handle at £10.99 did seem rather a lot. As a comparison, my usual purchase would be the Gillette Venus Spa Breeze, this is usually around £5 with 2 razor heads and a handle.
Both razors have a large skin moisturising bars either size of the razor heads which make a significant difference in preventing shaving rash and dry skin. The Olay razor did seem superior in this respect, but only marginally. I noticed that my legs felt moisturised more in between shaves, and there was slightly less redness in certain places.
After my partner saw my new razor, he must have decided it was 'his' and preceded to use it to tidy up around his beard. He gave it a great review and even boasted to his work colleagues about his soft skin.
I will continue to buy this as and when it should be put on special offer for my partner, but I personally will be sticking to the Spa Breeze razor.
I was given this product to review as it is relatively new to the market, but if you were to purchase it, the usual retail price is £10.99 and with that you get one razor handle and one venus razor head with two bars of olay moisturising soap attached. It also comes with a little stand that has a sucker on it to fix somewhere in the shower that I've found to be quite handy.
At first use, I thought it was a great item, it does moisturise legs very well and they feel very smooth after even using it for a couple of minutes quickly. I have very dry skin and my legs felt much nicer after using it, even after the first use. Even inbetween shaving my legs have felt a lot more moisturised.
The more I've used it though, the more I've found that the head on the razor bends backwards and moves so much that it makes shaving on legs and underarm in particular very awkward. It has got to the stage now where it is so hard to get the razor part to even touch the area you want to shave without it bending backwards. To me, it is only (quite) suitable for using on legs and not for underarm which to me defeats the object of it. I would like a razor to be easy to use on both areas and with this I have to have another razor on hand (which is a normal venus razor!) to do underarms.
There are two bars of soap on the razor and given the price, these bars in my view don't give value for money as after 9/10 normal uses mine have worn away quite a lot and I can't see it lasting very much longer. I know normally some would argue that you are supposed to change the heads on the razors often or purchase another to use but at it's current selling price I would expect to get a few more uses than I have done from it.
The other thing I have noticed as I don't think it gives a very close shave, maybe because of the head bending backwards all the time, because I've found I'm needing to use it more often than I do with the normal venus razors and my legs don't feel really smooth (hair-wise) like they do after using one of their normal razor heads.
In conclusion, the idea is fantastic and will moisturise well but I think they may need to take another look at the design of the product to stop the head moving so much and also look at the price to make it cheaper for consumers.
As most women out there, I am always on the look out for that perfect shave that is easy to complete and will leave me the skin similar to that of a Greek goddess. When this item came up to review recently, I snapped at the chance.
The packaging oozes that sense of luxury with the vibrant golds and yellows. I wasn't disappointed when I actually saw the razor. The handle has been ergonomically produced so I felt it wasn't going to be a chore to carry out the shave. It has 2 strips of, what can only be described as, soft and rubbery material on it ~ one above the razor and one below. This is so you don't then need to apply a shaving gel or cream beforehand and then the second one moisturises your skin after the hair has been removed.
In my opinion, this was a very clever use of Olay in a shaving product. My skin felt instantly soothed and moisturised as I shaved. I did think that with the bulkiness of the strips that I wouldn't achieve a clse shave but I was completely wrong. The 5 blades make sure that I don't come out of the bath all stubbly.
One thing I would like the mention is that when you do use it the yellow strip goes looks and feels sticky when touching it on the razor. This doesn't seem to show on the skin though which is quite a strange phenomenon.
It comes with a small shower holder with a suction fitting on the back. I never use this personally as I put my razor out of the way of small hands in my household.
Overall, I am extremely happy with this razor. At a cost of £10.99 though, it isn't cheap. This is about the same price for most in the Gillette range so, in my opinion, I would buy just the replacement razor blades and use them on an existing Gillette handle I had as they are all interchangeable.
I usually shave every couple of day and the moisturising balm and shaving strip have kept up with this. The blade tends to go blunt for me before the strips have been used fully. This, and the price, is why I have scored it 4 stars out of 5.
I would completely recommend this razor to a friend especially at the moment as Gillette will refund your purchase price if you aren't happy with the results.
Also, as it is a new product on the market, there are lots of deals to be had. In Boots, for example, you can buy the razor and get a pack of 3 blades for free.
