A great aftershave that can last well into the night

I first tried Hugo Boss aftershave after my brother gave me the remainder of one of his bottles as he decided he no longer wanted it and from then i have always had a bottle of it in my toiletries cupboard to use on the odd occasion.

The actual smell of the aftershave when you first apply it is actually a little strong and off putting, personally i find it's not even nice when first put on however once that initial strong smell has worn off it really is an amazing smelling fragrance, a very manly smelling aftershave, one i have found most do enjoy only a select few have had an other opinion to I. The fragrance lasts well and can still be smelled way into the night and sometimes you can even smell it over that stale smell of alcohol you have left over in the morning.

In conclusion this is a lovely smelling aftershave however i would recommend going to a shop where you are able to get a sample or are able to spray a tester bottle to see if you like it but if you do it really is a great aroma to have.

        Man in a bottle

My job requires me to be on my feet most of the day and to meet a wide variety of people. People expect a certain level of professionalism and decorum when dealing with their doctor so I do try to keep myself to a high level of presentation and cleanliness, a more difficult task than you'd think on a 12 hour shift! With this in mind I try and keep a selection of aftershaves in my bathroom which can hopefully project some confidence (and hide some of that 4am smell!).

Hugo Boss "Hugo" is one of my favorite scents. I originally bought this back in 1999 when I wanted to get some nice aftershave for a date. I always remembered it as being a strong and forceful smell, but not overpowering. The date went well so I can only assume the aftershave worked! 12 years on and I'm still using the stuff, and so are a lot of other people too it seems.

Hugo comes in a green khaki cardboard box which is reminiscent of an episode of M*A*S*H or something. When you see the green you'll know what I mean, it looks like the colour of an old GI's helmet. Inside the military theme continues as the bottle, made of a thick clear glass, is capped by a silver thumbscrew, almost exactly like an army canteen from years gone by. The cap is linked to the glass by a green strap, again continuing the armed services persona. I quite like the design as it's quite unimposing sitting on a shelf and I feel it exudes a form of manly confidence, much like the smell itself actually.

I won't claim to understand a huge amount about fragrances but I'll try my best to describe the smell of Hugo. The base of the smell is a rich musty flavor similar to being in a lumber yard. It's quite masculine and strong and evokes quite a visceral reaction in your gut. On top of this are notes of spice and fruit. These notes however take a backseat unless you get close enough to smell the wearer's neck. They're a nice harmony to the woody tones but people will know you for the strong presence of the base notes. To put it in less fancy language; a patient recently asked me what aftershave I was wearing and after I told her it was Hugo Boss she responded with "Oh I thought so, it smells like a man". Now whether she was just trying to be nice or being honest I'll never know but I thought it was a good summary of the smell. Man.

Hugo is a relatively cheap aftershave when compared with the Armanis and JPGs of this world, weighing in at £36 per 150ml. As the smell is strong you'll find you don't need to apply a huge amount to retain a smell for the entire day.

If you want a nice fruity aroma that barely leaves a trace then look elsewhere, if however you want to smell like a cleaned up John Wayne then pick up some Hugo.

        Disadvantages

Middle of the road but great for post gym sweats

This is a fragrance that I buy from time to time when its on offer, its one of the after shaves I would say is steady and consistent rather than being the kind to make men jealous and women swoon.

This is a popular scent and is easily available on the High Street as well as online, my partner buys this for me sometimes in Boots as she gets her points, and I don´t complain because a bloke can never have too many smellies and it saves me buying them for myself.

        Price:

The scent is available in 100ml or 150ml bottles, the 100ml bottle will set you back £30, the 150ml bottle £38 in Boots, or for bargain hunters you can get the 100ml bottle for £19.20 at Fragrancenet.com.

        Appearance:

I have to admit the appearance is ugly, its functional rather than spectacular and the khaki bottle and bottle with the Hugo Boss logo label in a shop style manner look to my mind cheap and a bit underdone.

I don´t really rate the bottle which has a lid you pull off and then splash it over yourself, I much prefer spray with after shaves or Eau de Toillettes.

        Smell:

The ingredients state that this smell has grapefruit, basil, thyme and pine needles with sage, jasmine, lavender and cloves. In the base sandalwood, cedarwood, patchouli, fir and basalm provide a woody dry down. I really couldnt identify any of these smells apart from Grapefruit which gives it a zesty kick, but the odour does remind me of forests and woods and has a very natural and manly scent, so I guess Pine Needles and Fir make sense. The overwhelming scent of this for me is spicy, it is musky with a real heavy hit to it, its not subtle and not understated this smells all day once you splash it on and I much prefer this to the prissy namby pamby scents I have had sometimes which smell of nothing.

        My View:

Its an ugly bottle and it is a powerful scent, I think its good value at 38 quid for 150ml as this lasts a long while and while I dislike the packaging and the bottle I like the brand, its manly, when you get the deoderant too you are very recognisable by your scent but in a good way. This isn´t the best scent i´ve had or currently own and definitely isn´t the most refined but if i´ve been boxing, playing footy or to the gym, I use this scent to mask and post shower sweaty smells and it does work a treat as all the way home I can smell myself, or the Hugo Boss version of myself.

I would suggest you look past the ugly bottle and crass advertising and enjoy the product for its smell which can be overwhelming, but does a job.

          good aftershave for all

I have used Hugo boss aftershave for many years now and i do not have any intentions of giving up now.

Obviousley the most important thing when selecting an aftershave is the smell that it gives you. I think the smell that this hugo boss aftershave gives you is great, it is a rather sweet smell that it gives you but it is not too sweet and it does not over power you in any way.

Through out the years i have been wearing this aftershave i have recieved alot of compliments and often people ask what aftershave i am wearing as it smells so good. Another positve aspect of this aftershave is a little goes a long way, as it is quite sweet you do not have to put a lot on in order to get the smell you desire. This means that you get good value for money when are using this aftershave.

I also think that the bottle and packaging which the aftershave comes in is quite plain and simple with hints of rugged manliness which is another good thing. As many main would not want to be too flashey with their after shave.

Overall this is a good choice for anyone to use, it may be particularly suited to the younger market as it is sweet.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

Has been available for a long time so someone must like it!

Hugo Boss introduced Hugo in 1995 and it was immensely popular when it was released. It had a definite young scent and was definitely popular with 18 - 25 year olds. I think that it still retains a big following and is as popular as ever and is holding its own in a saturated market.

Its fragrant nature explores essences of fresh citrus, apples and pine blended with notes of clove, rum and sandalwood, Hugo is a casual and sporty type of fragrance. Hugo is a refreshing, spicy, lavender fragrance suitable for casual and sporty wear. It definitely has a sweet smell to it, but in my opinion it is not overly powerful or sickly sweet. It is a very distinctive smell and easily recognisable if someone walks past you in the street wearing it.

It is quite a masculine scent and I would not imagine that a girl would wear it, unlike some other lighter aftershaves. It could even be described as 'rugged'!

100ml can now be got for as little as £20 on some websites and I think you can get 125 ml bottle size as well.

I feel that the scent lasts a long time when you spray it on you, so no worries about it fading or anything.

A great scent, great value for money too!

            Advantages

            Favourite aftershave.

Hugo Boss is a fashion house that has been selling designer men's clothing since the 1920s. They launched the Hugo fragrance back in 1995, and it continues to be a bestseller today. It's my favourite aftershave, which is handy, as it's also my husband's favourite - although it does tend to make Christmas and birthday presents slightly predictable!

Obviously the most important thing about an aftershave is how it smells, but if it came in a very fancy, ornate bottle then I doubt my husband would want to have it sitting on the bathroom shelf. Fortunately, Hugo is self-consciously butch; the clear, slightly blue-tinted, glass bottle is shaped like a military water canteen, complete with a green bendy strap to retain the lid when it's removed. The lid itself is silver with deep grooves around the top, with a light, "army" green plastic ring around the bottom and lining the inside. The front of the bottle carries a discrete square with the distinctive Hugo logo - black writing on a red background - in the top half, and "eau de toilette natural spray vaporisateur" printed on a clear background beneath. The liquid within is clear and colourless.

Onto the all-important smell: I love this stuff. It reminds me of hot, balmy nights on honeymoon, strolling along the beach at twilight. It definitely has the sense of outdoors about it - strong and earthy, warm yet fresh. It's the sort of aftershave that I'd imagine a strong, confident man to wear. It's quite traditional, and masculine. This is not a fragrance for trendy young metrosexuals. Hugo Boss describe it as, "a truly seductive contemporary fragrance... which explores essences of citrus, apples and pine...blended with notes of clove, rum and sandalwood".

When first sprayed on you get a strong hit of citrus and sandalwood, along with an initial strong note of spearmint; the mintiness fades quite quickly though, allowing more mellow, spicy, tones to come through. It seems to last well - I find that I can still detect it on my husband after a full day's wear, although it is very subtle. I'd say that it was suitable for day or evening wear, as it's quite light and not over-powering, but still "there".

My husband has sensitive skin, but has never had any reaction to the aftershave or irritation from it.

Hugo comes in a variety of sizes, and in a "splash" bottle as well as the eau de toilette spray. The last bottle that I bought was a 40ml spray for £14.99 from Savers. This is small enough for my husband to take with him on overnight business trips. The only possible criticism I can think of is that, being a glass bottle, it might break, although he has yet to have this happen. He wears Hugo most days, and a bottle this size lasts around two to three months, so I'd say it was reasonable value for money. It smells more expensive anyway ;-)

One final word about the Hugo Boss range in general: If you decide to try Hugo, you should be aware that Hugo Boss now produce a fairly wide range of aftershaves and ladies perfume. Confusingly, they haven't been the most imaginative in naming these, which mostly have the word "Boss" or "Hugo" in the title - for example, as well as Hugo aftershave, there is Hugo Duo, Hugo Boss Sport, Hugo Energise, Hugo No.6, Hugo Xx, Hugo Xy, not to mention Hugo for Women! Hugo itself comes in a green cardboard outer box, with a yellow label showing a picture of the bottle and the Hugo logo (black writing on a red background). Make sure you get the right one!
