Johnson's Silky Skin Shower & Shave Cream
Advantages: Pleasant pretty smell, leaves skin feeling cared for after gentle cleansing
Disadvantages: Didn't quite allow me to get a 'silky smooth' shave
I came across this some time last year when it was first out. I tend to stick with gillette shave cream (which I've reviewed on here) because I know what it's like and it does the job, so I wouldn't have noticed this if it weren't for the signs up advertising it.
Silky Skin Show & Shave Cream is produced by Johnson's, (branched under 'Johnson & Johnson'), who have years of knowledge and experience in skincare. I have fairly sensitive skin so I tend to opt for products that say they're kind or especially designed for sensitive skin. Johnson's products tend to emphasise their skin kindness, and this is described as being 'comforting' and 'gentle'.
The product itself is a good idea. It's annoying having so many bottles crammed into the shower cubicle that end up scattered over the floor as you try to find what you're looking for. This aims to combine your usual shower gel with your shaving cream.
It's available in 3 varieties: Shower and Shave Comforting and Refreshing, Shower and Shave Nourishing and Shower And Shave Skilky Skin (which is what this review is for).
It comes in a pretty light pearlised pink plastic bottle which contains 250ml cream. I've come across this in a few supermarkets and beauty stores, so although it doesn't seem to be hugely popular you should be able to easily pick one up. Boots sell these for £2.24. How good that is price-wise depends really on how much you would typically spend on shaving cream and your usual shower gels. But I would say that overall it's a reasonable price.
The product contains aloe vera, along with other 'skin conditioners', which are supposed to soothe and relieve dry skin. So when you use it as a body wash it helps moisturise whilst cleansing. They claim the lather from the product will help you get a smooth shave without any of those annoying little nicks and cuts.
So what's it like? When I use shower gel I squirt a blob onto a puff, so I did the same with this. It's easy to use with the click-down lid and it doesn't get messy applying it. It's slightly harder to get out however when you've got over half way down the bottle, so you might need to give it a good shake, or leave it standing upside down. The cream is light pink in colour and smells quite pretty without being overbearing. You get a fairly good lather on the puff which makes the bottle last longer too.
It does seem to gently cleanse and leave your skin feeling that bit more cared for and moisturised, and the gentle scent has a calming and comforting quality to it. As for using it as a shave cream however, I'm not so convinced. Again, I just used the puff to put it on rather than smear lots of the cream over my legs. I didn't get any cuts or nicks, but I didn't find it gave a close shave either. Perhaps this will vary from person to person and depend on how you use it and what razor you use, but I didn't quite get the silky smooth legs I was hoping for.
Overall, it's a good idea to combine shower and shave gel into one product. It has a pleasant pretty smell, and lathers nicely. It feels like a quality product that does care for your skin by gently cleansing and moisturising, though I personally don't find it quite lives up to the promise of silky smooth legs.
Summary: Worth a try if you want something kind and gentle for your skin
