I get really bad shaving rash when I shave, because of this I always use a shaving cream. This works out expensive however so although I have ones that I always go back to I'm more then happy to try new brands if they're on offer. So, when I was in town the other day and saw Superdrug's shaving cream on offer for 99p I thought it worth a try.
I always opt for the sensitive over ordinary when trying a new brand partly because I have a list of allergies as long as my arm and partly because I find they usually work better as they're gentler on my skin. I also liked the fact that this says it has added Aloe Vera as I do find that products with Aloe Vera do tend to help soothe my skin.
~*~ The Packaging And Appearance ~*~
The packaging is actually very impressive for a value product. It's a black aerosol with a picture of a woman's legs at the top. On the bottom half of the aerosol it has the superdrug star and tells you that it's a sensitive shave gel and that it contains added Aloe Vera.
In the picture dooyoo have, it's shown as having a blue pump but on the carton I have it's a light turquoise green and this is covered by a clear plastic lid. On the back it tells you that the aerosol contains 200ml of gel.
~*~ Using The Shave Gel ~*~
I'm sure we all know how to use shave gel but here we go anyway! The instructions say to put it onto my hands and rub it into my legs but I just put it straight onto my legs and then rub it into a lather. Finally, shave and rinse it off.
~*~ Effectiveness ~*~
I'll start with the positives - this gel didn't irritate my legs and the Aloe Vera did seem to soothe my skin. I didn't develop a rash and my legs weren't sore and irritated afterwards so in that sense I would say the gel was effective since avoiding shaving rash is the main reason I use shave gel anyway.
However, I found that I couldn't get a close shave with this. Even after having gone over my legs twice I still had some stray hairs .. not a good look! I also tended to cut myself more with this gel then I do with any other gel or when not using anything at all. I'll admit that I'm not the most careful person when shaving anyway and so a few nicks I expect but I do want my gel to offer some protection and despite the can saying that it does protect from cuts and scratches I didn't find this.
~*~ Availability and Pricing ~*~
The gel is (obviously!) available from Superdrug. I bought it on offer for 99p but I believe the full retail price is £1.99.
~*~ My Opinion ~*~
I won't be buying this gel again. Whilst it did stop any rash I didn't find it gave me a close enough shave and instead of a rash I was covered in cuts and scratches (lovely!). The gel itself is coloured a metallic blue/green which I really liked and it did lather up well. Whilst it is cheaper then most other gels I didn't find it good value for money at all and would rather spend my money on a slightly more expensive gel that actually does the job it's designed for. For those interested it's unscented so will be good, in that sense, for those with sensitive skin or those with allergies to scents but again there are more effective products that also offer this.
