Pack & Go Storage Box
Advantages: Keeps items dry and out of the way, doesn't take up much space, suitable for garden/balcony
Disadvantages: On the flimsy side when assembling
In our garden we have a garage with a shed type building next to it and a small summerhouse but will my husband put the gardening tools away in either of these after use? .No! Of course not! He says there isn't room and once they are put away he won't be able to find them again!
The summerhouse is a fairly new addition as we only bought it last year. The idea of buying it was that it would look nicer than a shed and we could store our patio furniture and a few other bits and pieces inside in some shelter over the winter months. Well a good idea but it is currently a bit too full for my liking.
But when the summerhouse was erected I suggested to my husband that it might be a good idea to buy some kind of small storage container to house gardening tools. I thought that there would be enough room beside the summerhouse to tuck away some type of storage. He sort of just harrumphed and was non-committal. I think this was probably because he had a vision of himself having to erect and treat another garden building.
I didn't exactly forget about this idea but let him think I had for a few months. And then a few weeks ago we were shopping in a Wilkinsons store and my husband beckoned me over to look at a plastic storage box which also doubled up as a garden bench. This was almost one hundred pounds which was more than I wanted to spend and so I steered my husband to some other plastic storage boxes, at the same time reminding him that we already had two wooden benches in our garden and we certainly didn't need or have room for a third. He asked how come we had room for a box then and I responded that this chest type container should fit at least on one side of the summerhouse and there it would be fairly inconspicuous whereas a bench would be wasted there as there wouldn't be enough room to be seated and we have enough chairs in the garden already. Hubby looked at the dimensions of this storage box and thought that it would fit and probably wasn't such a bad idea after all.
The Pack and Go storage box that we were interested in was reduced in price and was selling for £30. I had seen a similar one in Poundstretcher which was a little cheaper in price but as this particular box in Wilkinsons was made by manufacturer Keter I thought it might be of a better quality then the one in Poundstretcher and therefore worth paying just a few pounds more.
There weren't any boxed items of this product o be seen around the store and, as this was Wilkinsons we thought that probably the display item was the only one. We asked an assistant who said she thought they were out of stock but she would go and check for us. She did this and came back about ten minutes later dragging a large box with her which contained the Pack and Go box. She informed us that this was the last one in the store room.
On a further visit to this same Wilkinson store we heard a couple ask a sales assistant if they could buy the same item we had bought from this store and they were told that it was only available on-line and could not be purchased from store. She may have been mistaken as we had purchased the same item only two or three weeks earlier and had no trouble with it going through the check out and I didn't see why it would be displayed here if it wasn't available from the store, or perhaps we were just lucky.
We had a bit of a struggle getting this and our many other purchases from the store to the car park in our Wilkinson's trolley (which we had promised to return and of course we did) as we had to ascend a few steps where the trolley could not go. We managed, and also fitted the long cardboard box into our car, then returned the borrowed trolley (and even got our pound coin back from the slot!)
The Keter Pack and Go was easy enough to fit together; it took my husband about fifteen minutes to assemble. It should have taken less time really but it was a little on the flimsy side. The pieces fit together easily enough without the necessity of tools but the problem was that as one piece was clicked into place then another piece would tend to slip out of place. It was a bit annoying but not too time consuming.
The storage box has wheels which fit to its base but these aren't anything great; they are really just like a plastic cylinder shape and are not very free-wheeling.
My husband put the assembled box in its location under the trees and next to the summerhouse. His verdict was that he didn't think that the quality of this item was particularly great but as we weren't intending to move it often, if at all, and certainly not far from its spot, then it should be okay for the purpose that we had in mind.
~~WHERE TO BUY/PRICE~~
Wilkinsons- £36.00 (but we paid £30.00)
Tesco Direct- £34.00
The Pack and Go box is in fact lockable but a lock isn't supplied with it. To lock it a small padlock will be required. This storage box can be folded flat when not in use and I think this might make it a good item to store summer toys in the garden. I really think it would be ideal to put paddling pool or swimming pool toys in especially inflatables and when the season is over the toys can be deflated and the Pack and Go once emptied can be folded up and then stored away for the winter. It won't take up much space when folded down.
I think, as well as for storing out door toys, it is a good storage idea for household tools but I think these should be in a separate weather proof container first, just in case.
We are using it for garden tools and in my opinion it is ideal for this use. My husband didn't take long to fill it up but whether he will always use it is questionable. Yet at least every now and again the garden can be tidied and all tools put out of site and stored safely under lock and key.
I think it is a good storage solution for the garden and would also be a good item for storage on a balcony. Really there are numerous items that could be stored safely inside. I would say it's suitable if you are looking for a small storage solution, not as big as a shed but big enough to store lots of toys or garden tools, or perhaps small pieces of garden furniture, or maybe barbecue equipment. Anything in fact that needs to be put tidily out of the way and in a weather-proof container.
We purchased this product in the beige colour (although I would describe it perhaps as more of oatmeal colour than beige which I think of as darker) with a green trim. It is also manufactured in other colours such as:
Taupe / beige
Grey / black
Light grey / grey
Light blue / dark blue
Contents should stay dry inside and ventilated at the same time.
Assembly Is easy and only requires one person.
Dimensions in cm: (W) 61, (H) 53, (L)120
Capacity: 305 litres
Lock details: Padlock hasp
For the purpose we bought the Keter Pack and Go for we are pleased enough. I wouldn't class it as very strong in terms of sturdiness, yet being made from plastic I think it will be durable. It certainly is very handy and helps to keep the garden tidier than it was. I think for the price paid it was worth buying for our garden.
As well as wheels (although these aren't great) it has handles to help one move it around. I think it will probably be best, if possible, to keep in one place when assembled. But it can be moved.
Summary: A useful outside storage solution
