Oxygen Segura
by Mephit I really like the Oxygen brand of shoes and boots, having had several pairs of Mary Jane type shoes from them before. They're quirky and well-made, and have always lasted me well. As the summer came to an end, I decided to treat myself to a pair of boots for the winter. Oxygen were actually quite short of stock in my size at their online ... store, so my initial choice of style was unavailable, but since I was determined to buy some boots from them, I settled on the Segura instead. It is available in three colours: apple green, brown with tan outer panels and black with dark green outer panels. I went for the black version. Although pictured here with a brown sole, my pair had a black coating, which I prefer. The boot has a nice buckle & strap detail on the outside, with the O2 logo impressed into the leather. There is a zip on the inside of the leg for putting them on. The wedge heel is about 2 inches high, while the sole has a good gripping surface. I can walk with confidence in most weathers and be kept warm and dry. The inners are lined in a soft tan material, which makes them comfortable to wear whether you have bare legs, trainer socks, long socks or tights on. The boot is calf-length. The length is quite good for me, ending just where my leg starts to curve in again to the knee, so doesn't cut me off in an unflattering place unlike some calf-length boots. I will happily wear these with an above the knee skirt for a bit of a bo-ho look or with jeans. I have found previously that footwear from Oxygen is instantly comfortable, and these boots were no exception. They just really suit my rather wide feet and there was no wearing in period. They are really good quality sturdy boots, which respond well to boot polish when needed. They've developed some creases, but that's normal wear and tear with leather and just adds to the character. They have retained their shape admirably after several months of regular use. The only problem, and it's very superficial, is that the leather strap detail through the buckle has begun to curl out. But this is probably because of my habit of sitting cross-legged when I can, thus rolling it up accidentally. The sole shows no sign of wear so far and the stitching, lining, zip and all other parts of the boots are in excellent condition. I have hopes that they will serve me another winter and perhaps beyond. I totally love these boots and would recommend them to anyone. They are available online from the Oxygen shop at £59.99 currently. Read the complete review |

Oxygen Hastings
by Mephit I'm a big fan of Oxygen shoes at the moment, and my most recent purchase from them is the 'Hastings'. I ordered it online direct from the Oxygen website, and it was delivered the next day. The service was great and the receipt in the box was personalised, so made me feel my custom was valued. The 'Hastings' is a Mary Jane ... style flat shoe, with soft leather uppers. It is a slightly unusual shoe, with assymetric shaping that mimics the shape of your foot. I love the quirkiness and slightly retro/vintage feel I get from the styling. The stitching and general quality of the shoe is great. My previous Oxygen shoes have lasted incredibly well, and I see no reason this newer pair won't match their longevity. The inside is molded cork, covered in a thin white suede. It's a lovely comfortable shoe, that takes no wearing in at all: instantly supportive and snug. The sole is nice and thick, with a gripping surface cut with an unusual design of criss-crossing wavy lines. It's a very similar shoe to the Oxygen 'Warwick' I've previously reviewed (I know what I like!), but instead of a strap that fastens with velcro, it has a solid strap. The button to the side is decorative only. The strap has a small elasticated section to allow the flexibility for you to get your foot in. The only problem I have with this way of doing the strap is that you can't tighten it across your foot as you could with the velcro fastening. When wearing with bare feet that's fine, but with tights the shoe feels looser and less secure. But that's a very minor issue. They're a lovely fit and so comfortable. The 'Hastings' comes in black, with a purple tartan button, in brown with a brown tartan button, or apple with a green button. I chose the black. Oxygen size their shoes using European measurements, but have a conversion table on their website. They sell their shoes in sizes between 36 and 42 (3 and a half to seven and a half women's UK sizes). They currently (20/03/11) have a sale on and are selling the 'Hastings' at £24.99. Oxygen Warwick
by Mephit Oh, how my tastes have changed over the years. From Doc Martens to New Rock boots to ludicrously high heeled confections to nothing but flip-flops. The flip-flop and yoga years, combined with already wide feet have meant there's no going back to pointy-toed precarious foot-wear. Luckily I don't *want* to go back to that, I feel ... ridiculous in heels these days and what with living rurally & running around with the kids find few occasions demand them. Thus I've been in the market for flats. When browsing my local Raw shoe shop a couple of years ago, I fell in love with these Mary Jane type flat shoes from Oxygen. Although in the picture it looks round-toed, it is actually slightly assymetric, more foot-shaped: larger at the big toe and curving back to the little toe. The shoe has got an unusual, vintage feel about it. It has a soft leather upper with 'O2' imprinted at the heel, and is available in apple green, lilac and black. The inside is shaped cork, covered in a thin suede with 'Oxygen' printed on it. This inner is really supportive, especially around the instep: very comfortable. The sole is nice and thick, with wavy grip lines. The strap secures with velcro. I bought the black version. The shoes were instantly comfortable; they took no wearing in at all. They were perfect for my rather wide, if short feet! I've had them for a good couple of years now and have worn them virtually daily. They do well in most weather, although in December when I walked a couple of miles in several inches of snow in them, they did turn rather soggy! (It wasn't my intention to walk in snow in them, I should add, just had no choice!) After this hard wear, they are still in pretty good shape: the soles haven't much grip left and the velcro fastening now pops off when I'm going up the stairs (which never used to happen!) but they've been excellent shoes: really good quality and robust. Their exterior looks virtually the same as new. They've been worth every penny. Although I bought these from Raw, Oxygen have their own website and a presence on Ebay & Amazon. I bought my next pair of Oxygen shoes from their website and they were delivered the next day, so their service is excellent. They currently (16/03/11) have a sale on and Oxygen Warwick shoes are priced at £24.99. Read the complete review |
