Walkright Buterfly Girls Boots
by chrisandmark My daughter received a pair of these boots as a Chrimbo pressie from Mark's cousin, I thought it was an excellent choice from a forty year old bachelor with no real experience of children. I knew he was thinking shoes when he phoned for her size, but I admit I stressed a bit about what he was going to actually buy. Never judge a book ... by its (his) cover, he surprised me with this lovely pair of boots. It turned out he bought the wrong size (an easy mistake to make, Hollie is a size nine but Simon turned up with a size six...) so I had to ask him where he got them from so I could exchange them. I was surprised when he said Shoe Zone as the boots look so stylish and was actually shocked at how inexpensive they were. They have a synthetic upper with a suede look which is actually very realistic, Hollie has worn them a lot since Christmas and they still look in excellent condition with the fabric not becoming shiny or worn. This can be a problem with suede effect shoes from the cheaper end of the scale, but these boots definitely look and act like bona fide suede even after weeks of wear. The slightly raised toe helps to prevent damage to the front of the shoe; obviously nothing can stop a three year old from scuffing her shoes and the boots are as kicked up as any other pair of Hollies shoes, I appreciate the fact that the scuffing stays localised though. What I mean there is that the scuff doesn't cause the surrounding fabric to start peeling off, again this can be a problem when buying cheap children's boots and once the scuff marks are too big you really can't be sending your kids out in them because they look such a mess! The lining of the boots is a soft, cosy fabric. It feels high quality although has a slightly plastic feel which I don't like, I've noticed that if Hollie wears these boots without socks or tights her feet aren't very fresh after taking them off. This isn't too much of an issue as she rarely sneaks her own boots on but as a confirmed sock-hater she will attempt it when she can, and it's then that her feet can start ponging a bit. At three years old! Must follow her dad, poor (smelly footed) sod! The rubber sole makes the boots ideal for the frosty weather we're having at the moment, and dare I say I'm not convinced we're done with the snow yet so I'm glad Hollie has a pair of boots with a 'sensible' sole rather than the more fashionable boots I tend to buy for her. The grips aren't particularly deep but the texture of the sole itself is enough to keep her from sliding her way to nursery, which can only be a good thing if you have such an accident prone child as Hollie! I'm confident that these boots are comfortable for the simple fact that when Hollie gets to choose her own footwear she'll very often pick these off the shoe rack. I've just slid my hand into the boot and the insole feels soft and well padded, but with enough support to keep her feet comfortable and secure for however long she's wearing them for. The zip which runs the length of the boot is also excellent as it's smooth and well designed enough for Hollie to be able to put them on with the minimum of help, the zips also help her work out which feet the boots belong on as she knows it goes on the inside of her leg. For some reason she was never able to keep in her head that a pattern (any pattern or logo) will usually go on the outside of her leg and always put her shoes on the wrong feet, but she always remembers that zips go on the inside! Strange how small children's minds work! I think these boots are fabulous, and at £12.99 are a real bargain. They're well made and very attractive, this design is available in child sizes four up to twelve and the sizing is accurate as Hollie is comfortable in the size nine I eventually swapped the original pair for. They would only, I think, suit very young girls and I doubt Shoe Zone sell many of the bigger sizes. The reason for this is that the boots overall have a very Barbie-like style and the cut out point for them looking cute (as opposed to a bit silly) would be around six years old. Walkright Flower Toepost Sandals
by chrisandmark I suggested these children's shoes to Dooyoo for one reason, to tell anyone who is thinking of buying a pair not to bother. It's a good time for this warning as I noticed they had been reduced in Shoe Zone yesterday, but even at the reduced price they are one of the very worst kids shoes I've bought for any of my three. They ... do look nice, very basic in appearance but an understated basic which stands out better than more bright and vibrant sandals out there. The white leather look straps are very summery, plus the sequins and flower detail above the toepost make them look very grown up and girly. There are more problems than bonuses though and as good as they look they are absolutely useless for a young child to walk in, and actually gave my three year old daughter an open sore between her big toe and the toe next to it. The toepost is very rigid, Mark said I should never have bought them for Hollie due to the open styling of them and I think he was right. Don't tell him though, it'll only go to his head! The sole is the thinnest I've seen, it's not a cork sole even though it's designed to look like it. It's simply a very hard and stiff sole with hardly any give at all as my daughter walks in the sandals, there's zero cushioning either which means there would be no chance of her walking any distance in them even though she is usually a very good walker. The velcro fastener on the heel strap doesn't work well either, these are so uncomfortable that they have barely been used but already the velcro has lost a lot of it's stickiness and now the edge of the strap flaps about and looks very untidy. Adding insult to injury, half of the sequins have dropped off the sandals so I can't even Ebay these now as even though the shoes themselves are more or less brand new still they look rough as as*holes thanks to Walkright not bothering to affix these properly. Mind you, I don't think I'd subject someone elses little girl to these awful shoes anyway so they'll be going in the bin rather than onto Ebay. I've honestly never seen Hollie trip so much as when she was wearing these. They are a completely unsuitable style for very young girls, and I was quite surprised looking at the Shoe Zone website today to see they start at a toddler size 5. This would fit a child of around two years old, which is ridiculous. A little 'un of that age is still learning to walk on their feet without stumbling, they need much more support than these shoes can offer and at such a darling little age they definitely need more comfort than these cheap and nasty sandals. £7.99 from Shoe Zone. Biggest rip off in the country. Read the complete review |

Walkright Fur Pom Pom Boots
by chrisandmark After the slagging off I gave the Gumbie boot I knew I needed to redress the balance by telling you about these excellent Pom Pom boots which I bought my three year old a few weeks ago. I hadn't actually gone shopping to buy boots as at the time it was what passes for summer in this cruddy country, but when I saw them in Shoe Zone for a ... very good price I thought I'd treat her. It turned out well as it goes because a couple of days later we had so much rain that she ended up wearing them - and Hollie is definitely a chip off the old block when it comes to shoes so she loves showing off a new pair! To me they're a kind of cross between a wellie and a moon boot. The main bulk of the foot is made of a rubberised material which is completely waterproof and rises high enough up the foot that children can splash in any puddles they like (within reason!) without making a soggy mess of their socks. The rest of the boot is made up of a slightly shiny quilted material, it's not exactly like a moon boot because the padding isn't as thick and although the boots do feel very cosy they are a lot easier to pull on and walk in (for kids) than actual moon boots. Not that me or my daughters would be seen dead in moon boots, who do you think we are??? Colleen Rooney??? The inside of the boots is completely covered in a pink fur lining, the inner sole is soft and comfortable and even though this bit isn't covered in the fur it does feel lovely and cushioned when I push my hand into the boot. My daughter has worn them with socks mainly but also wore the boots to nursery one day last week over her wooly tights, they have looked fab whatever she's worn them with and the boots go equally well with jeans or a skirt. It's not a fashion show at that age, but most toddler boots are either functional or attractive but useless at keeping the weather out. These score full marks on both points, they look great but also keep Hollie's feet lovely and dry even in the bad weather. The pom poms look great too, sometimes I think they can look a bit tacky but they give these boots a lovely girly look and helps break up the uniform black colour of them. The bow detail is well made too, it's stitched through the knot of the bow which is good news because anyone with young children will know the nightmare of having to keep redoing bows as they come undone 20 times a day! If you come to buy a pair of these boots I'd say to take your child with you as the sizing is a bit off. Hollie is a size 8 but I'd say these have come at least a size bigger, it's kinda a good thing as it means they will last longer but it is something you'll want to remember if you like to buy shoes and boots to fit perfectly at the time. The boots are well made, surprisingly so for the low price. The thick sole has deep grips which I'm sure will come in very handy if we have the white winter that has been predicted, but also the sole is strongly attached to the foot of the boot and I can't see any reason they won't last for a long time. You can also see from the appearance of the boots that they're not going to look tatty too quickly, the only thing I'm keeping an eye on is a couple of lines of the stitching on the quilted part as it looks like it's going to start coming loose. There's not much I can do about that though so I'm not going to worry about it, there hasn't been a problem up to yet so hopefully the stitching is strong enough to hold for as long as my daughter is wearing them. £12.99 from Shoe Zone, huge bargain!
