Advantages: comfortable sole, long lasting
Disadvantages: not for narrow feet!
I have a pair of counterfeit Birkenstocks. Yes, I am a traitor, but to be honest these are far more comfortable than the original Madeira Birkenstocks that I had to give away as I couldn't wear them.
I bought them on ebay after deciding that I was a size 5 (turns out I wasn't and this was my mistake) - they arrived brand new, and because I'm a great big mug, I threw out the box and cut off the tags before trying them on. To rub it in further, I wore them out several times, trying to convince myself that they fitted properly and weren't a size too big. They didn't at all, and they ended up cutting my feet to bits!! The sole was comfortable... until the strap started cutting in.
I have narrow feet as it is, so I thought that a narrow-fit Birkenstock would be ok. Nope. There should be some kind of warning on these things that unless you get fake lookie-likey ones, there's not a hope in hell of them fitting one's skinny little feet.
I suppose I should thank Birkenstock though for inspiring other brands to come out with similar shoes that actually fit me. I know they fit cos they make farting noises when I walk. Apparently, this is supposed to happen but I'm not hedging any bets!!
I must admit there's something very German-touristy about them. Birkenstocks and socks are NOT the way forward.
Summary: could be the best shoes in the world if they weren't so funny looking.
