Birkenstock shoes started around 200 years ago (1774), in the small German village of Langenberg.

There are various names and styles, available:

Birkenstock® (classics)
Footprints® (closed shoes)
Papillio® (seasonal)
Alpro® (professional)
Birki's® (PU/PVA)
Betula® (fashion)

The upper part of the shoe is made from a material called Birko Flor® - a combination of soft acrylic and polyamide felt fibres with a durable smooth leather-like finish.

The inner part is made from suede leather - it's strong and supple, and is dyed rather than sprayed, allowing maximum breathability.

I think these are the best summer shoes I have ever purchased. They retail at around £34.99 but I managed to pick up a pair of brown patent ones for £24.99 from TJ Hughes. (I'm not sure these stores are all over the country but they do have a website).

I walk to and from work every day - a total of around 2 and a quarter miles a day and during the Summer months my Birkenstock's are the only shoes I wear. They don't rub or make my feet tired and they're very lightweight.

Another brilliant thing about Birkenstock shoes is they come in so many colours that you'll be able to find a pair to suit any outfit.
