I chose these shoes because the heel is a block so wider than the heels on shoes I used to wear before my illness, I liked them because they gave me some extra height (and I am in need of extra height!!) but the thicker heel distributed my weight better so made them more comfortable for me to walk in. They are available in black and red, I don't know about other colours as that's all I saw when I was browsing the different styles that are available. I brought black even though the red pair were my favourites because I knew I'd wear the black ones more, the red pair were beautiful but the deep cherry shade looked like they would be hard to style with anything in my wardrobe apart from one dress that I don't wear very much anyway.
The styling on both pairs is the same and only the colours are different, the shoes are made of leather but are covered in velvet. They have a soft and luxurious texture that doesn't look like suede even though it has a fabric look instead of a matte or shined leather finish, the inside of the shoe is soft leather that feels comfortable and cool against my feet.
The heel height is 4" but it doesn't feel that high because it's so thick, there's a small hidden platform inside the shoes but I don't think it's even a centimetre of a rise at the front of my foot so it's the chunky heel that balances out the shoes for me and not the platform. The heel and a strip of leather at the edge of the shoe have been left free of velvet and I think that's a good contrast of colours and textures, the uncovered parts have the same colour (black) but the leather isn't as deep as the velvet in shade. The heel has also been given a mottled effect and that's pretty, it reminds me of beaten metal and I think it's striking and something that says to the other girls that I'm wearing a darling designer pair of shoes!!
The bow on the toe is beautiful, I thought it was too fussy to begin with and was worried the fabric was going to fray. This is the most expensive pair of shoes I've ever owned and I considered them the same as I would a pair that cost a fifth of the price in New Look, I've had shoes with a bow embellishment before that has frayed and come out of shape very quickly (not from New Look!!) so I hoped this wasn't going to happen with these. The bow is reinforced and feels starched to the touch but still looks beautifully soft, it's a sparkly fabric that is inlaid with tiny crystals.
With Christmas coming up it seems that my event calendar seems jam packed with work events (despite being on maternity leave) and parties organised by family and friends. Despite the fact that my daughter will be around a month old I am already hesitating attending a lot of the functions which are pencilled in to my calendar. However, family is different and of course my daughter will be very much a part of the festivities. I have recently started to add a few items of clothing to my new yummy mummy wardrobe and as I have been working so hard for my other half since being on maternity leave he treated me to a pair of shoes out of the blue which I received a few weekends ago.
Now, he knows what I like and don't like but it was still a big risk to buy the shoes without me knowing and to be honest I am surprised he got my shoe size right but it was the thought that counts and he really pulled it out the bag with these shoes he'd even wrapped them up and put them in a gift bag. What an easy way to get on a woman's good side - buying them shoes!
The gorgeous shoes in question I have been told are solely for the Christmas period and even though I have worn them everyday in the house so far I am not to wear them outside until December which is fine by me I just can't help trying them on and looking at them! They are from one of my favourite brands, Carvela. Apparently he didn't find this hard to figure out as there are numerous Carvela boxes around the house!
Anyway, the gorgeous shoes are called Grow and as I said are by Carvela. They come in either black or red and are a made of a soft velvet material which has a delicate jewelled bow on the front of the shoe.
What Carvela say about Grow:
"Grow by Carvela is a sumptuous court following many of the catwalk styles with its trendy block high heel. Featuring gorgeous bow covered in jewel detailing and finished in a plush velvet fabric this is the ultimate evening shoe for the season!"
The shoes are definitely for evening wear and I wouldn't wear them to work however tempted I would be! The velvet material is a lovely fabric which gives these shoes a very luxurious finish and I don't think I have seen any velvet shoes recently which is definitely a good thing having a pair of shoes which is a bit more unique is always a good thing as there is nothing worse than turning up in a pair of shoes which are the same or very similar to everyone elses. However, velvet fabric needs to be protected and Carvela do recommend that you purchase a protective spray to use on the shoes which can help look after the velvet and keep them looking at their best.
The lining to these shoes are black leather which again make these shoes a bit more comfortable as it isn't synthetic like a lot of linings. There is a decent amount of padding in the footbed and the heel of these shoes which provide an extra bit of comfort which will no doubt come in very useful when wearing these shoes during party season!
What I like about these shoes most is lovely jewelled fabric bow on the front of the shoe it really does add some glitz and glamour to the shoe and is definitely the main feature. The little jewels are quite small which I think gives a better overall effect rather than using larger jewels which can be a bit garish.
The heel is quite high at 11cm which for some is a bit too high but I find that because the heel is quite chunky that the height doesn't seem as high and you get a bit more support from a wider heel than you would with a stiletto heel. Also having a chunkier heel means that the heel tip won't need to be replaced as often as a stiletto heel as the block heel covers more of a surface area. The shoes don't have a platform unlike a lot of shoes which is nice but there is a little padding in the footbed to make them that bit more comfortable.
Despite only wearing these around my house to wear them in I have found them incredibly comfortable to wear with no rubbing whatsoever. The fabric body of the shoe is soft and sturdy but supple enough for them to move with the natural movements of your foot and the round toe gives some much needed room for your toes. They are incredibly easy to walk in despite have quite a substantial heel but as I said above because it is a block heel they don't seem quite so high when walking in them.
Grow are available at Carvela retailers both in store and online (John Lewis, House of Fraser etc) and I was naughty enough to find out how much they cost! They will set you back (or your other half!) £150.00 a pair which is quite a substantial amount of money especially on the run up to Christmas and even though I would have bought a pair I probably would have waited for the sales! But they are incredibly gorgeous.
For me these shoes are definitely going to add some glamour to my new yummy mummy status (as my other half calls it!) and I can't wait to wear them during the festive season and I have no doubts that they will resurface from my wardrobe and worn at every opportunity as they are an incredibly sexy pair of shoes which are more refined than the average platform shoes.
