As the warmer weather approaches, I always start to think about what summer sandals to get my daughter. For the last two summers we have invested in a pair of Doodles from Clarks and they have always impressed me enough to return for more the following year.
Being three years old is quite an important age, and most little girls know what they like and what they absolutely refuse to wear. For this reason I always take my daughter with me to make the final choice in design.
We happily browsed the selection of this year's Doodles a couple of weeks ago when we went in to get feet measured.
The designs on the Doodles this season vary quite a lot from looking quite babyish through to very grown up designs. Despite this, there are enough designs to suit most children however independent or fussy they are about what they wear.
We settled on a lovely pair with hearts and stars emblazoned on them, I was a slightly worried that there was so much white in our pair but I do know they go through the washing machine well enough so I didn't discount them because of their colour.
Doodles are famously known for their canvas materials, although there are designs now that contain more rubber as well as the canvas. Personally we try to stick to the canvas designs as they allow the child's feet to breathe better in the hot weather, at the same time as not showing too much bare skin to the sun.
They are set apart from being a sandal because they are more flexible than leather upper shoes.
All of the range has sensible fastenings for children's feet. I love flip flops and pretty slip on sandals, but they aren't practical for running about and playing in. I always worry that accidents will happen due to the design of the shoes. I don't worry about this with Doodles.
Price is always a big factor when buying shoes, but thankfully the Doodles range are well priced compared to competitors. A pair of Doodles are around the £15 mark, which when you compare to the prices you'll find in shops such as Marks and Spencer's and Next, then the price isn't too high at all.
As mentioned with the after care of putting through the washing machine, I have always found that no matter how dirty our Doodles get, they come up looking almost like new when put through the wash. I haven't ever found the colours to fade or run by doing this. You can't do that with a pair of shoes can you.
Overall I am happy to return to the same brand each summer as long as the quality stays as it has been so far. It also means that I just have to buy a pair of beach shoes that are suitable for the salt water. As good as Doodles are I wouldn't put them to the test of the great British salty sea.
Summary: a well made, well priced summer shoe
