Advantages: good store and good customer service
Disadvantages: none this time
Having learnt to walk and then wanting to walk everywhere we had to take our son to get his first pair of shoes!
We chose to go to Clarks which is a small store tucked away in the corner of our local Mothercare world. We walked into the store area, which was very clean, the displays were all well laid out, there were a few toys around for the children to play with and some soft seating to sit down and rest our feet!!
It was easy to see which section contained the 'first shoes' and we'd been looking for just a few seconds when an assistant came over to see if we needed any help. I said that our son had recently started walking so we needed some shoes for him. She showed us the two main types she would suggest as suitable for him which were the pre-walker/crawler shoes or the first walkers.
She then measured his feet, both length and width are measured. She disappeared for a few minutes into the stock room and came out with a few pair of shoes for us to see and for H to try on. She and I agreed the first walkers would be the most appropriate, so I chose the colour I preferred, they were fitted on my son's feet and he toddled round the store (hanging onto my finger!) to try them out. He did look a little clumsy initially as he'd not walked with shoes on before!! We said we'd take them!
As part of this special shoe buying experience Clarks offer a little reminder of the moment and take a polaroid picture of your child wearing his/her first pair of shoes which is put in a little fold over card that has the date and other information on that you get as a keepsake. You are also given a little credit card sized reminder of when your child is due to be re-measured and their current shoe size.
The shoes, although so small and so perfect, don't have such a small price!! The ones we purchased were £20. The first shoe range currently goes up to £26.
They are very well made shoes, they are soft so therefore comfortable yet provide support where needed. The sole is soft rubber providing a good grip yet also very flexible.
All in all it was a very special occasion buying those first shoes, which will soon be heading for a keepsake box along with the card and picture we received on the day!!
Summary: whole experience for buying first shoes,
