      Lovely flat shoes from Demonia

Demonia are a designer of all sorts of gothic styled shoes and boots, and are a popular brand within the alternative fashion scene. I am a big fan of their styles and hold them in a high esteem for items of this type. I first saw these shoes when I was out doing my Christmas shopping and couldn't resist treating myself. I bought mine for the reasonable price of £24.50 from Blue Banana. Blue Banana is an alternative clothing outlet with several high street stores across the UK, and you can also order online from www.bluebanana.com

The shoes have a simple but bold styled design and this makes them perfect for everyday wear. I love flats for wearing out and about and as I'm tall I rarely wear heels because I just don't need the extra height. I save my heels for special occasions and have been making the most of wearing these flats regularly. They have a basic Mary Jane style with an open top and a strap over the toes as well as over the ankles.

What makes these shoes stand out from other similar designs is the attention to detail. They are available in either brown or black faux leather and I have the black version. The stitching adds a decorative touch even though it is plain and functional, as the colour stands out slightly to give contrast. The straps are a nice thickness and have the most incredible buckle details. The buckles are shaped to look like cogs and have raised details marked with a fake aged effect in the indents to give it some added character. The buckles are a flattering bronze tone and the holes to adjust the sizing are also edged with bronze coloured studs. If you look inside then you will also see that the lining is made of a cog print fabric - lovely!

The ankle straps really help the shoes to stay securely on your feet, and this stops them from slipping off or causing rubbed areas from movement. The buckles are a large size but they are still somewhat tricky to adjust and you need to look closely to get the strap fitted to the right size for your foot. I had a little help from the shop assistant before I bought my pair and this has worked a treat for when I go to put them on now.

I don't own a car and I walk pretty much everywhere so my shoes take a good old pounding! These were very quick to wear in and feel comfy on my feet even after prolonged periods of walking around outside, which is a necessity in my book. They are good for all occasions from work to play, but the only problem I have is that when it rains the top of my feet get wet. Unfortunately I can't always predict when it will rain so sometimes I do end up with wet socks :( The base of the sole does not have a particularly good tread but I haven't had any issues with keeping my grip on the pavement!

The shoes can be maintained by cleaning with an ordinary shoe polish and buffing to get a shiny finish. The faux leather material has not shown any scuffs or damage marks yet, although I have only had them for a couple of months. I think that if real leather had been used then this would have been a higher quality finish but on the plus side it means vegans can wear these pretty shoes too!

So, one final thought for those who are new to the world of alternative fashion, and that is: what is steampunk then? Well, steampunk fashion is based on the idea of an alternate future world where technology has taken a different shape and engineering is still lead by steam power. There are heavy references to the Victorian era, and several favourite looks are inspired by Egyptology and science fiction writing. Key components of this look include accessorising with goggles, pocket watches, parasols and cogs. So here, the simple addition of a couple of cog motifs is all that it took for these shoes to be labelled "steampunk". Of course, these can be worn with any outfit that you feel like and I'm sure that there will be plenty of non-steampunkers out there who like the look of these shoes.

Personally, I think these shoes look gorgeous and I love everything from the flat shape of the toe, to the double straps, to the cog buckles, and of course the fact that they go with anything. If you have larger feet I will give a word of warning, Mary-Jane shoes can make your feet look disproportionately large. I am a ladies size UK 7 and these shoes really do make my feet stand out!

A gorgeous pair of shoes that are stylish and practical AND a bargain price - hurrah!
