Dewalt Blk 6Inch Safety Boot Sz9 MAXI9
Advantages: Good level of safety and protection & good quality
Disadvantages: Very big and heavy for me to wear
In my first Archaeology Unit job I was pleasantly surprised to find that they provided all the PPE (Personal protective equipment) kit for the staff free of charge. Archaeologists are more often than not working on glamorous construction sites rather than jumping around gem-filled ancient tombs and this requires you by law to wear the correct PPE. That also meant that you did not get a choice in what brand or the quality of kit you wore. The work boots that I was given were the DeWalt Black 6 Inch Safety Boots.
DeWalt are perhaps more well known for their power tools used in the construction and manufacturing industries rather than footwear. DeWalt began in 1936 where they started manufacturing radial arm saws and other stationary woodworking machines. It is now a subsidiary of Stanley Black & Decker brand.
The safety boots come in a plain black box with huge yellow lettering across the top - spelling DeWalt. Inside is some stuffing and tissue paper and the boots. Now for all the ladies out there safety boots are not at all fashionable, they are clunky, huge and very unflattering. But we don't wear them for the fashion stakes, they are there to protect your feet from being crushed so I can forgive them not being the most attractive pair of boots that I own.
To look at the boots are an all over black colour and come up to just above my ankles being a 6 inch boot. They have a thick, chunky sole and lace up fronts that go over a padded tongue piece to the top of the boot. DeWalt branding is written all over the boot (in three places) in bright yellow writing.
The boots are made out of quality black leather uppers with a breathable lining. They are not intended to be fully waterproof but the leather tends to keep most of the rain out, although you can get some water seeping in behind the laces and tongue which is obviously not watertight. The inside of the boot Is very well padded and comfortable, though these can get quite hot in the summer months. The insole apparently is anti-bacterial with odour reducing qualities - which you need as I say in the summer when they get quite hot!
Being safety boots these of course have the steel toe cap present, in these DeWalt's it is a 200 joule toe cap including compression protection of 15,000 newtons. The sole of the boot also has a dual density seat region for shock absorption and a steel midsole for under foot protection, we've all heard the horror stories of huge nails going through peoples feet!
These boots are also;
PUR sole resistant to 300°c
These boots come in sizes 5 - 13 and are perhaps aimed at the male wearer, they are men's sizes and I got a size 7 thinking there wouldn't be much variation in proportions, however they are more like an 8 or 9 to wear! So I have to wear big thick socks to fill them out (which I do when I am out on site anyway).
These are great for toning your legs - the steel in the bottom not only keeps you safe but gives you a
good workout if you're wearing them throughout the day! They are reasonably comfy, but so big and bulky that I really don't like wearing them - points for the safety factor but minus 2 points for their size and unflattering qualities. You can expect to pay up to £80 for these safety boots, a small price to keep your feet safe.
Summary: A good quality safety boot from DeWalt - perhaps not the best fit for women
