H&M Fabric Sneakers
Advantages: Comfortable, well shaped, more durable than expected
Disadvantages: Very short laces on the black pair, the dye comes out when wet
When Hollie started school last September I realised I was going to be doing more walking than usual, especially as my two oldest girls' had been taking themselves to school for a few years giving me a break from the school run. The problem I had was that during this period of respite I'd done barely any walking at all so had to invest in some comfortable flats, mainly as I'm a lazy bugger and tackling the mile round trip in my usual shoes would have made my feet ache - and I really don't need much of an excuse to jump in the car and get into the bad habit of driving to school again.
I bought these plimsoll style shoes from H&M not long after Christmas, I like to keep my trainers for the gym really as I don't find them feminine feeling at all even when worn with jeans or trakkie bottoms so these seemed a good compromise. They have a 100% cotton upper with a rubber sole, the rubber from the sole is taken up the shoe slightly - a style I'm not overly keen on personally but it has been done well with this pair and ensures they don't look like PE pumps!
They're incredibly comfortable with a much more substantial feel than you'd think - the shoes look really flimsy but once they're on and laced up they provide support for my feet and also feel nice and firm against the sides of my feet. I have two pairs (one in white, one in black) and while the laces on the white shoes were perfect, the black ones were much too short which prevented me from tying them into a bow properly - I like to tuck my tied laces down the side of my shoes but that's absolutely impossible with these as the loops of the bow and ends of the laces turn out so ridiculously short.
The sole is very comfortable as it is lightly padded and has been shaped to provide a little support for the arch of my foot, not a huge amount as these are obviously 'comfort shoes' but I can feel the shaping of the sole as I walk and am confident that I'm not walking flat footed. The upper of the shoes are also nicely cushioned, even when laced up tightly they feel incredibly comfortable on my feet - particularly around my toe area where I sometimes experience aching when wearing such flat shoes. There has been a small amount of creasing at the front of the shoe, but this is to be expected and is in no way as obvious as the creasing that occurs on cheaper versions of this style.
The heel and back of the shoe is reinforced with a small cotton panel, this fits in with the styling of the shoe but also prevents creasing at the back which can often happen when you wear this style of shoe regularly. I find anything with a plimsoll design can have the same effect as when you wear cheap Ugg style boots, once they start creasing at the back you might as well throw them in the bin as they look appalling - these look immaculate in this area even after many months of wear.
They're not waterproof obviously, I was caught in a very heavy shower while wearing my black pair last week and came home with very squelchy footwear and cold feet - the black dye had also absolutely coated my socks, which surprised me as they hadn't lost any dye at all previous to this soaking. They dried fine without losing their shape, I knew they would as I've successfully put my white ones through the washing machine a couple of times with no unpleasant consequences - obviously white footwear gets dirty quickly, it's handy that they can be washed occasionally and don't need throwing away or dyeing at the first grimy incident.
Being cotton these shoes keep my feet extremely cool and comfortable even on hot days, this morning I took the kids on a pretty long walk around a local park and my feet still felt incredibly fresh when I got home - this is despite committing the mortal sin of wearing 'sporty' footwear without socks! No whiffiness or sweaty feet (yuk!) here, actually I wonder if I shouldn't buy my partner a pair as he could do with a little help in the foot-freshness department!
I can't for the life of me remember what I paid for these shoes, although something is telling me they were around £9 a pair. I think that's reasonable considering they've lasted much longer than I thought they would and are so comfortable to wear - they're available only in H&M and I'd recommend looking in there as I've worn this style of shoe from other stores and they just haven't had the same high quality as these ones.
Summary: A nice pair of budget 'comfort shoes' for when it doesn't matter if your footwear is fashionable!
