When you can buy wellies for less than a tenner from the high street, at first thought, it seems difficult to understand why anybody would pay £40 for a pair of Hunters.
As a country bumpkin, I spend a lot of my time trudging around in the mud. I have owned numerous pairs of wellies over the years and, to be honest, they've all done their job pretty well. Therefore, my reason for buying a pair of Hunters is an entirely shallow one. I think they're quite pretty.
I own a nice pair of red Hunters. They're a nice solid, matte, rubbery colour. They have an adjustable buckle on the side (though I have never needed to adjust their width, nor have I ever seen anyone else with adjusted wellies). They come up nice and high on the leg- unusually high in fact- but it doesn't look strange and keeps more of your leg dry and warm than other wellies might.
I feel that the Hunters are very well made. The rubber feels very tough and durable and I know that they will last me a long time. The grip is better than other cheaper wellies and have saved me from slipping over a fair few times.
They're very comfy. They are warm on the inside and provide just enough support for my feet. If your feet do get a bit chilly in the winter months, Hunter wellie socks are available, and they work a treat! The Hunters seem to be more sculpted than other cheaper brands of wellies and are well shaped for my feet and legs. This extra tightness is not uncomfortable or restrictive, but it does mean that boots don't come off very easily, not that that's a bad thing! It means that you can walk through muddy or boggy ground without getting stuck or losing a shoe, but it does mean a little bit more effort when it's time to take them off. I often find with some wellies that the part that goes up the leg is too wide and it can get a bit drafty. I have never had this problem with the Hunters. They're completely waterproof, even after having been submitted to paddling sessions. If you do accidently get water in them, they dry very quickly too.
I really like my Hunters. While they cost more than your standard pair of fashion wellies, I think it's worth it if you get a lot of wear out of your wellies.
Summary: A great pair of wellies, very glad I bought them!
