“ Brand: Hush Puppies / Gender: Women „
When I was thinking about suggesting these shoes for Dooyoo I wasn't sure if Hush Puppies were still making them as I bought mine in the January Sales at my local Jones the Bootmaker shop. However a quick trawl of the Hush Puppies website revealed that this style is still in production and as they are so comfortable to wear I can see why so I thought I would add them to review.
I choose these shoes after all the horrid snow in December last year as my previous work shoes had given up the ghost after all the snow and sludge attacking them. I wanted a pair of smart shoes for work that would be suitable to wear with trousers since generally in the autumn and winter I wear trousers to work. The high over the top of the foot design of these shoes lend themselves well to being worn with trousers.
The shoes themselves are made of leather uppers, with an elasticised triangular section at both sides of the upper at the bridge of the foot. Hush Puppies call the shoe a twin gusseted slip on shoe for this reason. The inside of the shoe is also lined in leather. The base of the shoe is I think plastic of some description as it is a moulded base with grips on and a small heel of about 3cm high. The shoe is also hand stitched to give it greater flexibility. The pair I choose are black but they are also available in brown.
Now with Hush Puppies for some reason I have always found it best for me to by a size 6 whereas in other shoe shops I buy either a 5 or a 5 and a half. Now whether this is due to size differences or the cut of shoes I am uncertain but I have found it doesn't matter what shoe or boot I buy from this manufacture a six is the way to go for me.
The appeal of these shoes initially was the high upper style of shoe as mentioned as it suits trousers very well. But I also liked the hand stitching detail on the shoes especially the bit at the front as this gives it a slightly more contemporary look in my opinion and makes them look a bit different to plain black sensible shoes. I think these can look smart enough for work I am a psychiatric nurse so smart casual is my dress code for work. However they are also sufficiently casual that they be worn with jeans or cords when I am out and about with my son or family on day trips.
The fit of these shoes is nice and wide as are a lot of Hush Puppies and as I have wide fit this suits me down to the ground. I had no problem breaking these shoes in and got no rubbing or blisters in my heel area from the first few days of wearing them which can sometime happen with new shoes and my feet. The shoes are incredibly comfortable to wear and I can walk miles in these either at work or with my son and my feet don't ache in any way.
The stitching on these is lasting well and there is no fraying of the threads noticeable in these shoes over 10 months or so of wear. The gusseted area is also holding up well and the elastic remains firm and they haven't loosened to such a degree that they slip on my feet whilst walking or slip off easily so I am very happy about that
I have used a Clark's protector spray on these shoes and this appears to have done them some good as there has been no damage to the shoes from water, snow or salt from the paths in winter. The leather with regular polishing and brushing shows no signs of wear and tear or discoloration. The only area where these shoes show their age is in the soles wear the grips are gradually getting a little worn down. As they are moulded plastic this means that the shoes can't be re-heel or re-soled to extend their life but given that the shoes have no cracks in the plastic bottoms I fully expect these to last me the rest of this autumn and winter before I will need to look at replacing them.
The grips on the shoes are good and I actually find these held the slippery ground well in the icy conditions that last winter brought. Also the other day at playgroup with my son after another child had spread liquid soap all over the floor the grips on these shoes allowed me to remain upright. So I think the grips on my shoes even though slightly worn are defiantly a good reason to buy these shoes as they seem to provide good stability and grip.
Overall and recommendation
I would definitely recommend these shoes if you need a smart but casual shoe for work or just leisurely days. They are comfortable to wear and very well made. At £50 a pair they are not a cheap pair of shoes but the quality of the leather and the workmanship and the comfort of the shoes is definitely worth the price in my opinion.
