I'm half American and have spent a lot of time in Native America country, such as Arizona and I have always loved moccasins. I always wanted a pair but could never really find a nice pair until I found these in New Look last year. So, what exactly is a moccasin? Well, according to an article I read, "A moccasin is a shoe, made of deerskin or other soft leather, consisting of a sole and sides made of one piece of leather, stitched together at the top, and sometimes with a vamp (additional panel of leather). The sole is soft and flexible and the upper part often is adorned with embroidery or beading. Though sometimes worn inside, it is chiefly intended for outdoor use, as in exploring wildernesses and running. Historically, it is the footwear of many Indigenous peoples of North America; moreover, hunters, traders, and European settlers wore them."
I bought these summer time last year in New Look and have not seen them in there since but it may be something they bring back again as I know they were quite popular. There were three colour choices available when I bought mine, a light tan pair, a darker brown pair and a black pair. I purchased the tan pair as I though they looked the most authentic and the colour was the nicest of all three.
I love New Look shoes and think most of them are well made, sometimes you do ahve to look around as some of the shoes are a bit tacky but these are really well made and look lovely in my opinion. The shoes are quite flat so when you put them on they do make you feet look quite flat. They are not as thin as ballet pumps but this is nice because it gives my feet a bit more room to expand and be a bit more comfortable. The suede material is nice and soft and cushions my feet and almost moulds to them when I have them on. On the front of the shoes there are some suede rope tassels and also a bit of suede material that looks a bit like a fringe. They definitely have a real mocassin look to them and although they're not what I would call "authentic' mocassins they definitely look the part.
The inside of the shoe is quite cute too as the inside sole has a really nice flower pattern all over it. Yes, you can't see this when you are wearing the shoe but it makes them look nice when they are off by the front door! The bottom of the shoe is made of a thin rubber and there is a slight slight heel on them, just a cm really do get them quite a cushioned feel when I walk. After a year of walking on these the sole has barely worn down at all which I think is great and I can see these shoes lasting for another couple of seasons which is great.
When it comes to shoes I am an addict and my poor other half watches our wardrobe become steadily filled with more boxes! Fortunately when it comes to flat shoes I have a hanging shoe holder and my flat shoes can be easily stored. I've become a real fan of moccasins as I find the style really quite cute, they suit my jeans and my baggier work trousers and they are incredibly comfortable.
On a recent visit to Peterborough I had a quick browse in New Look and ended up of course in the shoe section. I came across their moccasin selection, one pair we're leather and the others were suede. I'm currently going through the animal print phase and in the end I opted for the a pair of suede moccasins with the front part of the shoe having a small leopard print pattern.
The suede moccasins at New Look come in red, sand and black (with the animal pattern). I chose black mostly for the animal print pattern but to be fair I wouldn't wear red and sand is just a bad colour choice for winter! Black shoes tend to go with so much more in my wardrobe so it wasn't a hard choice to make.
The main detail as you can see from the picture is the leopard print pattern which just adds that extra bit of detail to the shoes as otherwise they would look like a pair of plain black moccasins. However, they do of course have the tassled fringe together with the small bow at the front. The animal print does give this shoe a little bit of a glam factor despite the style of shoe being a moccasin!
The shoes are made from suede/ leather and are soft to the touch but not as soft as I expected. The leather seemed a little stiff to begin with and the suede although soft it wasn't as supple as I'd have liked. However, I did try them on in store and they were comfortable and I know as they are leather they would give a bit more. They have a flat synthetic sole which is hard wearing.
The inside of the shoe is lined with black fabric which does give them a little comfort when wearing them but there is no padding whatsoever so after a while if you have been wearing them a long time they could become uncomfortable especially for the arch of your feet. The shoes do give a little support to your feet but I do think that once the leather really supples up that they may gape at the sides.
I've had my pair for a few months now and I've worn them a lot around the house and popping into my partner's office and have proved quite comfortable. They did rub me for a while which meant I'd generally have to put plasters on which was bit of a pain but eventually they stopped rubbing but I found the fabric lining a bit too tough. They haven't softened as much as I'd have liked which is hardly a problem as they have kept their shape well and they haven't gaped at the sides but I'd ideally like them a little softer to wear but as they have stopped rubbing this is hardly a big problem.
The shoes definitely reflect their price tag as even though they are quite well made the materials used are not the best quality but I can see the shoes lasting really well, especially with have a hard synthetic sole which doesn't shoe wear that easily. Definitely a recommendation if you are looking for a reasonably priced pair of shoes for general day to day wear but if you are wanting a bit more comfort then I'd suggest you pay a little bit extra and look elsewhere.
