Once upon a time I pretty much always lived in heeled boots but then I started to get a bit lazy and would opt for the easier to wear flats and over time I have worn heels less and less and would only tend to wear them for a night out. I decided around six months ago though that I wanted to go back to wearing heels for work and so invested in a pair of boots with a small heel however when browsing the new look website one night I spotted some wedge ankle boots which had a zip down the sides and these grabbed my attention as a boot that would be suitable for work and out of work and so I bought them. This is my review of the boots.
I actually ordered the boots online on the new look site and they didn't have my usual size four in stock so I opted for the size five as I have worn size five boots from new look before. The boots fit me well and so I was happy with the size I bought. The boots aren't showing online anymore as far as I can see but they may well be in store so it is worth having a look. They were available in a three to eight from memory though obviously you will not always find them all in stock.
The boots are a simple design really and are a low ankle boot in a black suede effect material. The fact that they are a low ankle boot does mean that you can get away with wearing them with pants, leggings, jeans and even skirts for a bit of an edgy look if you should choose to and so they are a versatile item of footwear really. I have personally worn them for work and with leggings and find that in particular with black leggings they extend the leg giving an illusion of longer legs which is good for someone small like me!
The boots have a pewter coloured zip which faces outwards when you have the shoe on your foot and this design makes them look a bit more interesting than just a plain looking the boot. I do have a couple of issues with the zip though and the first is simply that I always expect it to be on the inside of my foot when I come to take them off and it can be a pain twisting around to unfasten the zip but I think for fashion reasons the zip is placed in the best place really. Also the zips can be tricky to pull up and down which I find a bit annoying. At first I thought it may be because they were a new boot and just needed some time to become worn if you will but they haven't eased any. I do always manage to get them up and down but it would be nice if this was a smoother process as I worry sometimes I am going to break the zip.
The boots have a wedge heel on them which measures 3.5" at its highest point and so they aren't a huge wedge but they are also not a tiny wedge which would defeat the object of an heeled shoe in my opinion. I find that when I have the boots on it takes me a little while to become accustomed to the wedge style heel and I'm not sure if it is just me but it always takes me a little while to walk properly in a wedge heel and more so than if I am wearing a regular heel! I have worn these shoes to work and whilst I did a six hour shift in them quite easily I wouldn't want to wear them for the nine or thirteen hour shifts as I think they would become uncomfortable due to the height and I also have to go and pick my son up from school when I am working and wouldn't fancy tackling the school run in them either.
I do like the way these boots look though and I think they are a versatile item. I would certainly wear them on a night out but they are ok for more casual things too. I think people who are "good" in heels would be fine with these for day to day wear but as I am not as good as I used to be in heels I do like the limit the amount of time I am wearing them. What I would prefer is if the boots had a platform on the sole to reduce the impact of the wedge and that is the main downfall for me as your foot is literally right on the ground with these ones.
These boots cost me just £12.50 as I had a code for 50% footwear at new look when I bought them. For the price paid I would recommend the boots and would perhaps have paid up to £20 for them but I wouldn't have wanted to pay much more for this fashion boot personally. I do think they will last well though and would recommend trying them on if you see them in store because they are a fashionable item which will probably be quite timeless.
Thank you for reading my review!
