Nike Air Max 1 have been around since 1987, and were the first pair of Nike Air shoes to feature the visible air bag. Since 1987, Nike has released plenty of new Air Max in the line, but I've gotta say that these ones are my all time favourites with the Air Max 90 Infrared coming in second.
I wasn't actually around when these were released originally (I came into the world 7 years later), but in the past couple of years I've really had my eye on a pair of these to add to the collection. As I've finally managed to get myself a pair, it seems like a good opportunity to give them a review!
First of all, I really wouldn't recommend these shoes if you're looking for running shoes. Obviously these shoes were originally designed for this purpose, but there are now really good barefoot style or more flexible shoes available. These babies are much better for wearing casually! Although these are quite retro looking shoes, they're kept fresh and modern with the new colourways Nike release every year. The Air Max 1's have definitely aged better than the BW's or the 95's. I bought a nice pair of pastel yellow and green (perfect for summer), but there's literally hundreds of different colours you can pick up and there's a few deals to be found on eBay as well.
The price for Air max 1's is usually around the £80 - £90 mark, but I've seen a few pairs of lightly worn ones go for around the £40 on eBay. Obviously if you're looking for the rare ones they're going to be a lot more expensive.. If you're looking to buy online or from eBay and you're worried about fakes then there's lots of information available on the internet about how to spot fake pairs. Overall, the quality you get for the price is pretty good. There's no shoddy stitching from Nike so they're unlikely to fall apart pretty quickly. The only small problem I have with these is that on some pairs the fake suede type material feels a little cheap - almost like felt which seems a bit of a shame as you can buy real suede Nikes for less! There's only a little bit of suede around the toe box anyway!
I'd say these fit pretty true to size. I'm usually a 4.5 and I bought a 4 and they fit really comfortably. They look like they would stretch a little bit of you bought them too small. Air Max are always some of the most comfortable shoes (is it because of that air pocket?!) and these are no exception. You can wear them all day without worrying if your feet will be bleeding when you take them off! They also seem to pretty much go with everything casual. They look good with jeans in the winter and they would look good with shorts in the summer so they're pretty much perfect!
If you're looking for a classic, retro type shoe then look no further!
