“ Brand: River Island / Type: Sandals „
In a bid to spend my Capital Bonds vouchers I received last year I ended up in River Island, a store I rarely ever go into just because I generally find the clothes over priced and sometimes a bit tacky. However, recently browsing the shoe selection I was really impressed in their range as it was quite varied.
I have already reviewed one pair (purple stud courts) but this review is for another pair I bought at the same time with some help from my vouchers and my own money. I don't know what came over me that day as I ended up walking away with two pairs of lilac coloured shoes! For this review the pair of shoes I will be reviewing are known as "purple peep toe platform shoes".
The shoes come in either purple or navy and I opted for the purple variety as I don't have any other shoes in my vast collection in this colour and I thought the shade of purple (or lilac) was a bit more unusual and ideal for spring/ summer. These are definitely an evening or an occasion shoe and not really suitable for general day wear around the town!
The shoes are peep toe in style which is quite narrow and you only get a glimpse of the toes which is quite nice and definitely suits the style of the shoe better than a wide peep toe as these shoes are certainly quite delicate. The shoes have open shanks (sides of the shoe) so there is no support other than the very thin gold straps at the sides which do not offer any real security for your feet. The front of the shoe is shaped nicely and does give the shoes a little extra detail. The front looks as if two oval shaped pieces have come together in the middle to give a nice shaped effect which is edged in gold.
To help keep the shoes on there are two thin gold leather straps which go around the ankle and are adjustable by two small gold oval buckles. These straps do attach to a piece of tough suede/ leather which rests at the back of the heel and ankle. To give the shoes a bit more detail there are two gold thin straps which I suppose act as the sides of the shoe, these don't support your foot as I said above, they are purely there for decorative detail. The shoes are quite narrow at the front so they probably won't be best suited to those who have wider than average feet as you may find them uncomfortable and badly fitting.
The shoe is made of suede or what small part of the shoe is made of suede! The front of the shoe is soft and does soften to allow the foot and it does supple a little with wear. The straps are made from a leather material which is already soft to begin with and will stretch with wear so don't use the same buckle hole every time you wear them as the hole may stretch and split. The lining of the shoe is synthetic and is gold in colour which contrasts nicely with the lilac shade and obviously matches with the straps.
The heel height of these shoes is around 12cm which is high but not too high that I find uncomfortable or unstable to walk in. The shoes do have a very slim stiletto heel which is gold in colour to match with the straps and even though I find the height of the shoes comfortable I did have an initial wobble when I first tried them on in store but after a few steps I was fine. The platform is quite thick (around 1.5 - 2cm) which certainly takes off quite a bit of the height from the heel. The heel tip of the shoes is very small and with quite a lot of wear the heel tip will need replacing as it will wear quite quickly.
I took these on holiday with me and wore them a few times when out on an evening and I found them quite comfortable. I would ideally like a little more support from the straps at the sides of the shoes as you do feel a little unstable when walking in them as you have little support around your feet and you don't forget this no matter how long you wear the shoes. The shoes didn't rub whatsoever - there isn't enough of the shoes to rub your feet but the front of the shoes are a little narrow and I did find them slightly uncomfortable when I first wore them out but once the suede gave a little they were fine. The shoes are well made although the suede could be a bit better quality in terms of its softness as it does feel a little rigid. I teamed the shoes with a lovely maxi dress and they looked great, the colour of the shoes are light and delicate as is the design. I would recommend these shoes as an ideal spring/ summer shoe but I am only awarding them 4 stars as I would have liked a little more support to the foot.
