      Disadvantages

A great addition to your shoe collection

My narrow feet pose somewhat of a problem all year round, so a few years ago when it came to summer I decided I needed a pair of sandals to see me through the hot weather...for what it was.

Now, it is notoriously difficult to find shoes aimed at people with narrow feet which even vaguely resemble anything fashionable. Most resemble frumpy shoes that my granny might wear - I'm sure they'd be great for her but they're certainly not to my taste! The 'Vero' sandal, made by Ros Hommerson, was the closest thing I could find to a fashionable sandal for narrow feet, and as I thought they could be a comfortable pair for long summer days out, I snapped them up.

At the time of writing they are on sale on the Ros Hommerson website for $56.70 (£36.91 - normal price $81, or £52.46), or at www.shoebuy.com for just below $81. Please note that obviously these are American companies, so Ros Hommerson only delivers to states in the US, and although Shoebuy do deliver to the UK, delivery charges will apply.

Ros Hommerson makes these Vero sandals in four different widths: N, M, W and XW. You may want to check first, though, as not every size comes in every width fitting. Their sizes range from 6 to 11, so there should be something to fit you. :)

My first pair of these sandals was in black, and I went on to buy another pair in pale pink as well. If my memory serves me correctly, they are also available in pale blue, tan, white, green and red.

These sandals are made up of two straps which go over the foot, and one strap around the back of the heel. All straps are secured by a large piece of Velcro, so there is plenty of room for adjustment. The Velcro does not extend over the edges of the straps, so will not irritate your feet in any way.

As I say, there is plenty of room for adjustment, so even if you buy a pair in a narrow width, if certain areas of your feet are wider or if your feet swell, these will still be able to fit.

The sole of each sandal is totally flat, which some people may not find the most comfortable, but they certainly are very practical. There is no padding whatsoever, and the sole is quite firm, so if you're looking for super-comfortable sandals, these probably won't be what you're looking for. Nevertheless, I find that they are comfortable for long periods of wear.

On the whole, these sandals are comfortable. However, after spending all day in them, the front strap can start to feel a little tight and the strap around the back of the heel can rub a little. I suppose this can be easily rectified by simply loosening the straps slightly, but it isn't always easy to keep adjusting your shoes every so often.

These sandals put up a great fight when it comes to wear and tear - in roughly six years the stitching (which, incidentally, matches the colour of the sandals) has not even started to come adrift or loosen. This is a quality pair of footwear which is strong and sturdy, and which will not fall apart on you.

Although I'm not 100% sure, I believe that these sandals are made from Brazilian calf leather, demonstrating that they are an excellent quality buy for the money you pay. As a result, they are easy to clean by wiping down with a damp cloth, which is especially important for the pale colours as they pick up dirt fairly easily. The top of the sole, where your foot will rest, is a pale beige colour, so if your feet are dirty then these can start to look quite grubby as well. Nevertheless, they can be easily wiped down as well, and in any case, your feet will be covering them so you won't be showing off a little bit of dirt to the whole world!

All in all, these are a good pair of sandals to have in your stash. They're not the most stylish or fashionable, but they give a very simple, understated look to your summer outfit. They're very practical and are comfortable to wear for several hours at a time. For the price, they're great value for money - the main reason being that they last so long. Ultimately, if you have trouble buying shoes to fit and are looking for some comfortable and good-looking sandals, these are your best bet!
