Ugg Boots: Classic Tall
Advantages: look nice, versatile, quality
Disadvantages: toes too hot, quite tight, cleaning/wear
I have owned a pair of tall flat classic Uggs for about 4 years now. I received them as a gift from my parents for my 18th Birthday after they had been on a trip to New York.
Prior to owning the genuine Uggs I had owned a few very cheap and pretty rubbish copies. At the time Uggs were all the rage and so you could get a cheap rip-off almost anywhere. When my parents were headed off to New York though I asked them to bring me back a genuine pair as they were cheaper over there. At the time it was a bit of a fashion statement to own a genuine pair of these shoes as they were and still are relatively expensive shoes. I was thrilled when I received them and have held on to them ever since.
The pair I got are in a lovely chocolate brown colour. I specifically asked for the taller Uggs because this was the style I was used to wearing and knew I liked. The boots reach mid way up my calf. The boots are primarily made from suede, with a real sheepskin lining. The materials are of really good quality and it is easy to see the excellent craftsmanship that goes into each pair. There is a nylon band around the top of the boot and the sole is ridged for grip and made of a thick rubbery foamy material. The sole is flat across, though the thickness of it means it would give you a little added height.
The boots are quite versatile because you can wear them straight up or roll down the rim at the top of the boot. The was quite fashionable when I first got these boots but since has fallen out of fashion. It doesn't make too much of a difference with mine anyway because the sheepskin lining is the same deep chocolate colour as the boot itself.
I do have one quite major reservation with these boots and I'm hoping this isn't something only I have experienced. I would say I have fairly average sized calves but I have always found the boots a little tight around this portion of my leg. Because they are quite tight around here I do worry a little that it makes my leg look even wider than it is because they fit quite snuggly. I also find that this aspect makes them a little uncomfortable to wear which is a real shame.
In retrospect I wish I had gone for the ankle cut Ugg instead as these might have been better but obviously can't go back now. I do like wearing these boots still and though my use is limited to long walks and particularly cold days I still do get a fair amount of wear out of them.
I do find though that if you wear them for any real length of time they become incredibly hot! This is testament to the quality of the sheepskin lining but it can become a little unpleasant if you are walking a long distance. I tend to wear them with leggings or tights. If worn with leggings then I also tend to wear socks too, though this does become extremely hot for my little toes. I am the sort of person who hates heat anyway and loves being cold in winter so this make be a criticism specific to me but sometimes I can't wait to get my feet out of them because they become very hot.
I also find that these shoes get easily damaged and are pretty hard to clean. I've come to terms with this over the years and deliberately don't wear them in wet weather or places that are dirty. It is a little annoying for me though because these aren't an everyday shoe and therefore I would like to use them in the way I use other boots. Because I've owned them now for years I actually care far less and am not as bothered about getting them wet or dirty so I will now wear them on muddy walks etc. (that's if my feet can take the heat). However, if you are looking for a durable all weather boot this is not it!
In terms of price these are a very expensive pair of shoes. I know you have to pay a little extra for the genuine article, and obviously in terms of quality of material and design you get what you pay for - this really is a lovely shoe. However, on a personal level I'm not sure they are worth it for me.
Perhaps if you get use out of them every single day then it would be worth the investment but I wear them occasionally and even then worry about dirtying them, overheating my feet or constricting the blood supply to my calves. I am glad to have had them as a gift but probably wouldn't bother investing in a pair again and certainly not with my own money.
Nice to have had as a gift but too many flaws for me.
Summary: A nice boot but too many flaws for me.
