“ Brand: Weird Fish / Type: Flip Flops „
It's been sunny, so the feet needed to come out.
I was looking for something a bit different but not too expensive by the way of flip-flops. As I trawled the aisles of Trago Mills, these Weird Fish ones spoke to me (not literally!). The pair I chose is not the colour shown above, but the version with a brown/blue sole, while the printed flowers and straps are still pink. I'm not keen on too much pink. You can view the flip-flops in both colours closer up at the Weird Fish website, along with their other products.
The footstraps of these flip-flops are a soft but strong cotton material, which is artistically frayed along the sides, apart from the piece going between the toes. A rectangular rubber label with the Weird Fish name is sewn in at the join.
The strap is firmly embedded in the squidgy sole. I'm not sure what materials are used in its production, but it's a squeezable synthetic. It has a smooth matt surface for your foot to rest on and a raised pattern underside for grip when walking. The sole appears layered, in different colours, shaped for your instep.
These flip-flops are very comfortable to wear, with a pleasant give to the sole as you walk, reducing impact. I quickly got used to the straps and the piece between the toes: some years with other flip-flops I've become quite sore there, but with the softness of the fabric with these, I've had no such problem. The fit is good for me, not tight, nor loose enough for the shoes to go flying off should I break into a trot!
They are very light, weighing in at 6oz (the pair together) on my kitchen scales (what research I do for DooYoo!) This means not only are they very convenient and effortless to wear, but they're easy to carry, making virtually no difference to the weight of my beach bag. They'd be ideal for stuffing in a suitcase for holiday wear, if you were worried about luggage weight for air travel: the fabric straps just fold down against the sole so they wouldn't take up much room either.
If I get them wet, they squeak slightly as my feet move inside them, but they dry quickly. I don't feel I have to worry that the soles of the shoes will slip when walking after getting them wet, they feel quite secure.
I think these flip-flops are well-made and have no worries about them falling apart too soon. The bottom of the soles do get a bit pitted by walking on gravel and so on, but that's as far as it goes. I've been wearing them fairly relentlessly for the last month, and they're still in excellent condition.
I feel these were the perfect buy for summer wear. I really like the style and how comfy they are.
Weird Fish are a British company, which focus on the surfing and festival-going market. The brand is available at some surfing shops, Weird Fish's own shops and online from their website, from which you can currently buy these 'Ziggy' flip-flops at £12. I picked up my pair at Trago for around £8.
