Advantages: Tasty Sauce . Plenty of Chicken

Disadvantages: No rice

On searching along the shelves in my local Marks and Spencer food store recently, I came across a meal I fancied trying. This meal is Marks & Spencer Sweet & Sour Chicken, which is 300 grams in weight. It can be found in the chilled section of the food store.

Marks & Spencer Sweet & Sour Chicken comes in an outer cardboard sleeve, showing (on the front) pieces of battered chicken in a sweet and sour sauce. Inside this outer covering there is a foil tray covered with a clear plastic sheet. In this foil tray are (at one side) the battered chicken pieces, whilst at the other side there is a tray containing the sauce. This latter tray is also covered with a clear plastic film.

I particularly like this type of packaging that Marks & Spencer use. The reason for this is that I can slide the outer sleeve over the inner trays enabling me to see the food inside before buying. This is one of the reasons why I bought Marks & Spencer Sweet & Sour Chicken because the food inside looked very appetising indeed.

Also on the front of the packaging there is the display-until date, and use-by date, which are clearly visible. Marks & Spencer Sweet & Sour Chicken is also suitable for home freezing. So as I had bought 2 of these to start with, when I got home I froze the spare one to have at a later date. The only thing I have to remember is to defrost the meal thoroughly before cooking, which is what anyone would have to do if you bought and froze it.

On the reverse of the outer packaging there are the usual cooking details, storage, and ingredients with the nutritional values as well.

The main ingredients are battered chicken balls (47%), of which marinated cooked chicken is 65%, batter (29%), and breadcrumbs.
The sweet and sour sauce (57%) contains many ingredients, (too many to bore you with). As I suffer from slightly high cholesterol the fat content is of use to me. This being 12.6 grams of which only 1.2 grams are saturated within the 300 gram meal. Thus Marks & Spencer Sweet & Sour Chicken is very healthy for me.

Now, to the meal itself. Unfortunately, Marks & Spencer Sweet & Sour Chicken does not come with any boiled or fried rice, chips or salad. I usually cook a portion of boiled or egg-fried rice to go with it. After cooking the Marks & Spencer Sweet & Sour Chicken in the oven for approximately 15 minutes at a temperature of 200 Centigrade or 170 Centigrade for a fan-assisted oven, which equates to Gas Mark 6.

The Taste.

I find the taste and texture of the chicken pieces to be excellent. My feelings on Marks & Spencer foods are that the quality is always great. When I have bitten through the crispy batter for the first time, my taste buds were really excited by the succulent nature of the chicken breast. To date, I have not found any chicken that is chewy or not edible. I think the sweet and sour sauce that accompanies the crispy battered chicken is very tasty, with a tangy after taste. There are pieces of pineapple and red peppers in the thick sauce. My thoughts on the combination of sauce and chicken are that they go very well together and make the Marks & Spencer Sweet & Sour Chicken a very tasty meal for one person.

The only drawback I have about Marks & Spencer Sweet & Sour Chicken is the cost. When I bought my first two, they were at a special price of £1.49GBP. This is actually half the original price of £2.99GBP. I think at full price the meal is slightly expensive, as you do not get any thing else apart from the chicken and sauce.

All in all though, I can recommend buying Marks & Spencer Sweet & Sour Chicken for the taste alone.

Summary: Some super tasting chicken in this easy to cook meal.

I agree their food is pricey. They do have some good quality and unusual types of food though and the shops are nicely laid out inside.
