Advantages: Every store you could possibly want, warm, safe
Disadvantages: crowded, lots of walking
Merry Hill - one of the country's largest shopping malls. Located just outside Dudley in the West Midlands, Merry Hill is at the heart of Midlands Shopping. Recently rated as being 1 of the top 5 places in the country to shop, even beating the near-by Birmingham City Centre. Merry Hill consists of around 200 different stores, ranging from Asda and Iceland to Gap and Debenhams. Having shopped at Merry Hill for most of my life I felt i was qualified to pass on my opinions of the place. If I could offer one piece of advice to prospective visitors, it would be this - WEAR COMFY SHOES!!! 'Cos boy will you need them!!! The magnitude of the place often puts people off, but I see it as a plus point. Why trapse all around your local town centre in the wind and rain, when you can visit all the major shops and more under one warm, water tight roof?? I admit, it can, even to me, seem a rather daunting place when you first walk in, but with plenty of maps, guides, and staff around to help you, even the most nervous of shoppers will easily find their desired store. Merry Hill is easily accesible by road, and extremely well sign posted. With over 2000 free car parking spaces available, you can usually find somewhere to park even during the January sales!! Merry Hill also has its own bus station and coach park, so access to the centre shouldn't be too much of a problem. While on the subject of transportation, the disabled facilities are excellent, with wheelchairs available for daily hire. In order to get the most out of your trip to Merry Hill I would suggest that you spend the whole day there. There is an abundance of places to eat and rest dotted around the centre, and also a creché for the kids. I feel though that it is only fair and just, to tell you both side s of the story. Most of the men I know hate shopping there, they go in, get what they need, and come out again within the hour(no stamina!). This
is also true of a few women, my mother for example, hate the site of the place, to her, Merry Hill = Crowds, which, is, usually true. So in short, if you don't mind lots of walking and few crowds, I recommend Merry Hill as a graet day out for all the family.

- 03/04/02 These shopping centres are convenient but they are always so packed it drives me mad. |

- 03/04/02 I like Merry Hill, but don't see how it can be rated as better than Birmingham city centre. All of the shops in Merry Hill are mainstream ones and you are hard pushed to find anything a bit different or alternative. |
