A Great Place For Families At Christmas Time

Otter Nurseries is a Garden Centre in Ottery St. Mary, Devon. The owners have set up 3 more of these centres in the South of England but the original one is located in Ottery St. Mary. The Ottery Centre is open 7 days a week, 9.00am - 5.30pm Monday-Saturday, 10.30am-4.30pm Sundays.

I live about half an hours drive from the centre in Ottery St. Mary and I have been there many times. Although it is a garden centre, it sells much more than just plants. You can purchase clothes, furniture, homewares, books, games, toys and much more.

The garden centre is large but has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The popular restaurant has recently been rennovated and is now very big, with a lounge bar and snack bar to be opened later this year. The restaurant has an extensive menu of cold and hot food/drinks and their extremely popular dessert counter. You wouldn't expect such elaborate desserts at a garden centre but the range here really does impress. The restaurant is great value - a meal, dessert and drink costs around £12.00. There is also an icecream parlour outdoors in the summer which is always busy, overlooking all the plants.

The best time of the year to go to Otter Nurseries is at Christmas. Every year they have an evening where Santa Claus is flown in by helicopter to the amazement of lots of young children. If you have kids they will love this and can later visit Santa in a great grotto in the Garden Centre's grounds. For around £2.00 they can enter the grotto, have a short talk with Santa and recieve a little gift. The centre is all lit up beautifully which makes it a great place for families to go out for dinner at Christmas.

Otter Nurseries sells a huge range of Christmas related products which usually are on the shelves from September up until Christmas. It is a great place to buy christmas lights, decorations, cards, presents and as it's a garden centre they even sell Christmas trees!

The shopping area has just had a large extension added and they really do cater for everyone. Last week I noticed they were stocking lots of modern art on canvas and I may go back soon to purchase some.

As far as plants go, they sell pretty much everything. This is a great place for keen gardeners or people who don't have much clue when it comes to plants. The staff are all happy to assist you with all your gardening needs. If you buy large items like soil or heavy potted plants, there are always young workers around who offer to take it to your car for you.

Last Christmas they had a memorial tree in store. I took my Gran out for a meal there and she really liked this, although it was a bit upsetting. By making a small donation you could write a special message and fix it to the huge Christmas tree with a ribbon. It really was a lovely touch and the tree was quickly filling up with messaged from people who had lost loved ones. I saw a man lift up his daughter and help her fix her message on the tree to remember her Mother who had sadly passed away. I believe the tree will be back again this year and it is especially nice if your children have lost someone they were close to.

Throughout the entire year, Otter Nurseries is a great place for gardeners and is very popular with older people who often go there for meals. At Christmas however, I highly recommend the place for families. You will have a great time shopping for everything related to Christmas and the kids will love it too!
