The only Royal Sweet Centre mentioned in Dooyoo was Blackburn, so before I begin, let me say this is not about that particular shop. Being Diwali, we spent the weekend celebrating in Leicester, where it would have been rude not to indulge in some traditional Indian sweets. We located the Royal Sweet Centre in the region of the infamous Belgrave Road.
I will take you through some of the sweets, which we took the opportunity to test out - all in the name of research, obviously!
* Jalebi, which comes in two different colours - yellow and a vibrant orange. I have a preference for the orange - don't know whether it's psychological as the ingredients are the same, but I just can't get enough! The ingredients are 2 cups self raising flour
* 1/2 tsp baking powder
* 1 cup yogurt
* Vegetable/canola/sunflower cooking oil for deep frying
* 1 cup sugar
* Few strands saffron
* 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
* 2 drops orange food colour
* 2 tbsps rose water
The magical result is a delicious, crispy shelled, swirl which is exceptionally sweet with a chewy texture that is dripping in a syrupy substance. They can be eaten hot or cold - we opted for cold - this seems to enhance the taste.
Ladoo- It is made out of flour and a variety of other ingredients formed into small balls it has a kind of crunchy, crumbly texture that has a danger of falling apart as you're trying to munch your way through. Not as sweet as the other Indian sweets which is why I managed to gorge myself on a few of these! Must work hard in the gym now - Blast!lol!
In Indian humour it is often used as a term of endearment for a chubby child - not exactly something you want on your mind when you're disregarding the calorific value of these gorgeous sweets.
Besan is made from ingredients similar to that of the infamous Ladoo. Again, there were varieties of this sweet - it doesn't have the same crumbly texture and caramelised syrup does not play a major role in this little gem. To describe the taste, i'd say it's drier than the other sweets and has a more filling capacity about it - i tried to eat more than one and failed....miserably. It's like i've been on a food challenge!!
Gulab Jamun - A brown ball which is made of a combination of double cream and flour (of which there are variations). It is typically rolled into a ball, then coated in a sugar syrup. The brown colour comes from frying the result. Gulab Jamun's can be topped with shreds of coconut, squashed into more of an oblong shape and have a cream filled centre - the variations are dependent upon the creator's mind! The various concoctions we saw literally made my mouth water, so the obvious choice was to get a few of each and ensure our taste buds had been fairly treated!
You can also be served a drink, in the form of Lassi, which is a traditional Punjabi yogurt based thirst quencher. Flavoured with various spices it can be made more unique with mango pulp, lemon, strawberry juice and others, to make it a delicious pick me up drink. As the Royal was quite busy, we opted for a quick lemon flavoured lassi, which left us £4.20 out of pocket, but feeling detoxed.
You are able to pick and choose the sweets you want, or get a mixed box - which means you can tailor it to your exact requirements. If you're abit more adventurous than us, you can opt for a mixture of everything. Out of the corner of my eye a pineapple halwa caught my eye - looking jellyish, I must admit, it did not appeal in the slightest.
The only snag about this particular sweet centre is the exorbitant price, but saying that, you know you're getting quality. The box we got, containing 8 pieces set us back by £12. The sweets are sold per kilo, meaning that the price of an individual item is difficult to decipher. It's akin to Marks & Spencers in terms of the sheer quality and texture of the sweets. All the sweets mentioned are widely available in most sweet centres, although quality may vary. We definitely recommend trying out the Royal sweet centre - which is pretty much a nationwide franchise.
