Rexel Style Confetti-Cut
by musicdave
I needed to find a shredder after my last one had given up. I searched for a while and found the Rexel 6 sheet confetti style shredder. The shredder looks good and is not too big that it will take up too much space. It is a pretty good price for what it is, £39.99 at many shops at the time of writing this review.
I am now on ... to my second Rexel shredder as my first had to be taken back to the shop which I bought it. It states that it is able to cope with 6 sheets at once but I have found that this is too much for it to cope with. On my first shredder I used to put the 6 in at once but in the end the shredder would overheat and finally it struggled with 1 sheet of paper. Maybe it got sick of all of the shredding? I then had it replaced and since then I have put no more than 3 sheets in at once and everything seems to be fine.
The shredder is quite loud when it but this does not bother me much as the paper has been chewed in no time. There is also a carry handle on the top which I have not seen on other shredders. It makes moving the unit around very easy.
The shredder holds 7.5L which does not mean much to me. All I know is that I have to empty the bin every few minutes if I am shredding continuously. For added safety protection, the shredder has a thermostat which turns the unit off if it starts to overheat and it is finger safe so no risk of injury from any fingers finding their way inside the shredder.
The one thing that I wish they had thought about was the fact that, by the time it automatically stops to say it is full, it is very difficult to open the unit to empty it. Once you have managed to open the container where the shredded paper goes the paper ends up everywhere. It would have been good if they had made the shredder stop a little sooner to make emptying easier and less messy. There is a viewing window to see when the shredder needs to be emptied but I have found this useless as I place mine on the floor so you can not see inside.
The paper which comes out is cut into very small confetti cut strips, 4x35mm to be exact, which is very small and could not be read by any would be identity thief. The shredder says it can take paper clips, which it can, but it also says it can take credit cards. Try this at your own risk as if 6 sheets of paper can break it I do not like to think what a credit card could do.
A good shredder at a good price which looks very snazzy. The best part is the 2 year warranty though as, in my experience, you may need it. Read the complete review |

ProAction 5 Sheet 21 Litre
by k2705
Its a sign of the times that home shredders are big business now and after our old one shredded its last the junk mail soon piled up so a new one was in order. We bought the ProAction 21 litre Shredder from Argos where it cost £19.99.
The ProAction Shredder came well packed in a cardboard box with instructions, I have long ... dispensed with the box but the information leaflet tells you all you need to know and the shredder is quite basic so its not complicated to put together or use.
The shredder is much the same as most others and is in 2 parts, the motor unit and the bin which will hold 18litres of shredded paper. The shredder comes complete with a plug already attached, the cable is approximately 141cm's long, not overly generous but personally we keep our shredder in the garage right next to the sockets so the cable length is no problem.
The motor unit measures approximately 29 x 15 x 7cm's, it has a slide button on the top which is used for turning the shredder on, off and reverse which is handy if the paper gets jammed, a quick burst in reverse often solves the problem.
The top of the motor unit has some warning symbols on it which are basically common sense, keep your hands away from the blades, don't let ties, hair or jewellery fall into the turning blades and don't put paperclips or cd's in the shredder.
The basket will hold 21 litres of shredded paper which is quite a lot, the basket measures approximately 36 x 28 x 14cm's and is made of a black metal mesh.
This shredder is a cross cut shredder and shreds paper into pieces approximately 4mm x 40mm, it copes with all sort of paper and even thin card.
I've been pleased with the ProAction shredder so far, in my experience home shredders never cope with 5 sheets of paper at once and although this one struggles a bit with 5 sheets it does work better than the last one we had. My husband wasn't keen on the mesh basket for some reason but personally I find it strangely relaxing to watch the bin slowly fill up.
The shredder is supposed to cut out if it overheats but this has never happened while I've been using it and we do get quite a lot to shred so I can only assume that the shredder will work for quite a long while before this happens, if you find the shredder stops due to overheating the instructions state you should switch it off and leave it for 30 minutes before using it.
If you are looking for a home shredder then I would recommend this one from Argos, its reasonably priced and as shredders go it works well, if I had to pick a downside to it I would say its quite noisy but personally I don't have a problem with it. Read the complete review |

Argos Value Cross Cut Paper Shredder

Argos Value Cross Cut Paper Shredder
I think a shredder is a must in this day and age with the risk of identity theft, it is not just the rich and famous that are at risk, it could be any of us.
=My Upgrade=
My original shredder was a self operated shredder, but after only getting about 10 sheets of paper through ... before it filled up, I upgraded to an electric shredder. I have a couple of the years, and the one that I have at the moment is the Argos Value Cross Cut Shredder, we have had this shredder for about 2 years now.
=Cost=
This was under £20, I don't recall exactly how much, as I brought a few things at the same time. This is available online and also in store.
=Single Cross Cut Shredder=
There are different ways that shredders cut the paper the general entry level shredders are like this one a single cross cut, which means that it cuts horizontally only, if you had a confetti cut - this is the more expensive shredders, and cuts the paper horizontally as well as vertically.
=Box=
The shredder is boxed, the box is blue and white cardboard with black writing, as what we come to expect with the value range.
=The Shredder=
The power lead is connected to the lid of the shredder, this is not a very long lead about a metre long, so you do need to be near a power socket, I tend to pull up a stool and do the shredding in the kitchen. The size of the shredder is H28.5, W14.5, D34.5cm. The shredder has an over heat protection, and this does cut in regularly, which if you have a batch of shredding to do, it does get annoying, but on the other hand it is good to know that it will cut in so that you're not going to blow the fuse box. It holds about 11 litres of paper, I find for me that is about half a carrier bag of paper.
=Reverse Function=
The printer has a reverse function, which can be used when cleaning the machine, although make sure that it un-plugged, as thus reverse function brings out any bits of paper that has got tangled up
=What can I shred=
The shredder can shred up to 5 pieces of A4 paper at one time, the machine has an auto start, stop function, and if anything becomes trapped in the mechanism it stops working. Once shredded the paper is about 5mm in width.
=What can't I shred=
You can't shred credit cards, cds, ID cards, staples, paper clips. All this can break the printer.
=Noise=
This printer does make some noise, but it's no more than having a loud radio on in the same room.
=Would I recommend=
I would recommend this shredder as it is good value for money, gives myself and my family peace of mind, that anything that can our identity is protected the best that we can. On average as a family of 4, we have about 1/2 carrier bag of shredding so for us, 30 mins a week and we're done.
=One Little Niggle=
I know its a safety point of view the cutout function if it over heats, - the motor can take 30 minutes to cool down, ideally shred little and often Read the complete review |
