Tesco 5 Paper Shredder
Advantages: Good value, shreds documents well
Disadvantages: A little flimsy, can only handle a few documents at a time
With all the stories that you hear about identity theft I do worry about my personal details being out there in the public domain. I try and do as much as I possibly can to keep my details safe but there is only so much you can do and I realise that they will never be 100% secure. To be honest I would feel sorry for anyone who tried to steal my bank details as there is so little in there! One thing I can do to help protect my details at home is to shred my documents such as bank and credit card statements so that no one can fish them from the rubbish bin.
I have had a few shredders over the years but one thing I notice about all the ones I have owned is that they seem to break suddenly and for discernible reason that I can fathom. Because of this I would only buy a cheap one now as it doesn't sting so much when I have to replace it. I got my last one from Tesco and it was only about £15 which is a great price in comparison with some shredders which can go for ridiculous amounts of money. These more expensive ones might be more heavy duty but for most households this cheaper one will be more adequate.
The shredder comes in two parts being the actual shredder part and the bin that your shredded documents go into. Surprisingly since its Tesco value it isn't actually all that ugly and I quite like the see through wire bin and I do find that because you can actually see in the bin it is easier to know when it needs emptied. The only problem with the construction is that the wire bin is a little on the flimsy side but this shouldn't matter since it is only going to be paper going in it but be careful not to lean on it or anything as it will probably dent and quite possibly collapse in on itself.
It is also a really easy shredder to use and is pretty much a case of plugging it in and then putting your documents through it. There are a couple of features on it but these are minimal and are basically just the auto and reverse modes. The auto mode is pretty handy as it means the shredder is in constant wait mode and as soon as you put your paper in the slot it will automatically start shredding. The reverse is for those times when papers get jammed and this sort of pushes them back up and I find that it is quite good and I don't usually have to worry about unplugging the shredder and manually removing blocked papers.
There is also a safety trip in the model which will trip itself if the motor is removed from the basket which is a good feature especially for those with small children in the house or else just those like me who are slightly clumsy and careless at times.
On to the shredding which is the reason for its purchase after all. The shredder does a fantastic job at shredding documents and there would be no way for anyone to reconstruct anything after it had gone through the shredder and the cross action shredding really does make them indecipherable. The shredder is supposed to be able to handle 5 sheets of paper at a time but of course this doesn't actually happen and it can only really manage 3 sheets together or perhaps 4 if the paper is really thin. This isn't a major problem for me and I suspect not for most households as I usually only have a few documents to shred at any one time.
Also anyone looking for a nice quiet shredder should look elsewhere as this isn't going to be the model for you. It makes a hell of a racket when shredding but I personally quite enjoy the noise and still get a childish thrill when shredding papers.
The wire basket has a capacity for holding quite a lot of paper which means that you won't need to be emptying it every other day unless of course you are shredding hundreds of documents a day in which case you should really probably be looking into buying a more robust and heavy duty shredder.
For the money this shredder offers excellent value. There are much better shredders on the market but for me this one offers the best value. It has lasted me longer than some other more expensive ones I've had and it does what I ask of it well. Having a shredder has also saved me a fortune in buying packing materials as I sell a lot on ebay so I just use the shredded paper as protection for my items.
If you are looking for a decent household shredder for personal use then you could do a lot worse than this.
