Tesco Value 7L Paper Shredder and Bin
Advantages: It is ideal for household documents
Disadvantages: The cable isnt very long
Although the shredder I am reviewing is the Tesco Value one, mine is slightly different to the picture Dooyoo are showing.
In this day and age a shredder is a must for most of us. Identity theft is unpleasant and very upsetting. Its happened to a member of my family and the after effects are not very nice. When we moved into our house we were given an old shredder that limped along for 3 weeks before eventually giving up and shuddered to a halt.
With money being tight we looked around for a new one and opted for a Tesco Value Shredder, my parents had had one for several years and it seemed good enough to do the job.
The shredder comes in 2 parts, the bucket which collects all your shredded documents and the motor part which just sits on top. It comes with a plug already attached and here is where you lose out buying value products, the cable is quite short, just 123cm's. Luckily this isn't a problem for me but if you were planning on having the shredder some way from the socket you may have to re think.
The overall size of my shredder is 30 x 27 x 16cm's , so pretty average for your everyday household shredder. The bucket is made from a sturdy black plastic which measures 26x27x16cm's.
The top part of my shredder is a silver colour, it can only sit one way on the bucket and the motor wont work unless you have the top on properly. The Value shredder has just 3 controls on the top by way of a little button that just slides along, these are off, auto and reverse. Off is self explanatory, auto is like the on button and reverse is very handy if you get a jam, sometimes putting the paper in reverse a few times will clear it.
The top of the shredder tells you that the maximum amount of sheets of paper you can shred at once is 5, I would totally disagree with this. The shredder will cope with 2 maybe 3 sheets if the paper is very thin but to be honest it struggles slightly with just 1 sheet if the paper is thick. There are 6 little warnings along the top of the shredder which are in picture form and not really that clear. They are don't put your hand in the shredder, be careful with long hair, be careful of wearing a tie or bracelets and don't try to shred cd's or paperclips.
The slot to put the paper in is 22cm's x 0.5cm and in the middle just inside the slot is a little black tooth, this pushes back when you put your paper in and starts the motor, once the paper is shredded and through the cutters this little tooth pops forward again and the motor stops. My shredder will work for 3 to 6 minuets continuous shredding, feeding the paper in constantly before it cuts out. Once cooled in about 15minuets it will work again. This is fine for me because we don't get that much to shred. If you have a lot of documents to shred or are looking for a shredder for an office then this probably wouldn't be the best one.
The shredded pieces of paper are nice and small measuring just 3.5cm's x 0.5cm so hopefully it should be enough to sufficiently destroy any information on them. To empty the shredder simply lift the top part of the bucket and empty your shredding in the recycle bin or wherever you choose. When you take the top from the bucket there is a flap of black plastic underneath that covers over the rollers so you shouldn't catch your hands on them, they are quite vicious looking things. I do find that when the bucket is full the paper can collect around the rollers, if this happens I sometimes have to take the top of the shredder of and clear the rollers of jammed paper. Of course to do this you should always unplug the machine first and take care not to cut yourself.
All in all we have been pleased the Tesco Value Shredder. Its been ideal for shredding our old bank statements etc and its great at Christmas for making your own festive shredded wrapping. I cant remember the exact price we paid but for those interested the shredder can be found online at Tesco Direct or in store at the largest Tesco branches.
This shredder does everything I need it to, its fine for average house hold documents and although it doesn't shred 5 sheets of paper at once, and the cable isn't very long its still a good little machine that has served us well, I would definitely recommend it.
Summary: A household essential
