Adego Do Cantor, Algarve Portugal:
... love going to Portugal. In particular I like going to the Algarve. The weather is nice most of the year round and the climate appears fresh and the air clean. I first started going about 15 years ago and have been maybe a dozen times since. As you can imagine I have been to many of the local tourist jaunts that you visit. One of the places I hadn t actually been to was any of the Vineyards associated with Cliff Ri... Read the full review: We're all goin on a Summer Holiday!! by stebiz |

One Pillar Pagoda (Hanoi, Vietnam) ... One Pillar Pagoda is situated within the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum complex, Hanoi s most popular free day out. Though in theory more than 900 years old, there appears to be nothing of the original structure remaining; certainly not the one pillar, which is made of concrete. The pagoda was, after all, blown up by thhe French in 1954, and afterwards completely rebuilt. The rather slimy green pond in which it stands - the shape of the temple resembles a lotus flower - doesn t add to the atmosphere. Nevertheless, it must be the most popular ancient monument in Hanoi, and thousands of visitors are photographed in front of it. The pagoda is dedicated to Quan Am, the goddess of... Temple of Literature (Hanoi, Vietnam) ... Vietnamese are not city builders, and one should not look for the great architectural monuments that would be found in a Western capital city. Furthermore, the Temple of Literature was (accidentally) damaged by the French in 1947, and what the visitor sees in a modern reconstruction. It is, however, perhaps the single attraction in Hanoi that best shows the character of Vietnam and its people, who have preserved this monument to scholarship for almost a thousand years. The Royal College here was founded more than 950 years ago, which makes it earlier than the oldest European university. Two inscribed stones on either side of the entrance command the visitor to dismoun... Read the full review: Vietnam's ancient university. by J_Russell |

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Area (Hanoi, Vietnam) ... the most popular destination for the visitor to Hanoi is the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh. Vietnamese people tend to expect tourists to pay a visit, and it would be both impolite and impolitic not to. So, despite a general disinterest in anything remotely political, off I went. The queue was immensely long, hundreds and hundreds of people, but foreigners go straight to the front, and a wait of fifteen minutes or so builds up a sense of anticipation. It was interesting to see the Vietnamese people waiting patiently; sometimes what appeared to be the entire population of a village had come as a group, dressed in colourful local costume. They appeared to be anticipatin... Read the full review: A cross-section of Vietnamese culture by J_Russell |
