Why would you visit a cemetery on you holiday I hear you ask? You won't ask once you have been here. The Arlington cemetery is the last resting place to around 260,000 thousand Americans and others. The stories behind how every one ended up here are as varied as they are fascinating. I am not sure what your reason will be why you were glad you came to this astounding place - but you will be one of around 4 million who do so every year. On arrival I recommend you drop by the Visitors Center at the entrance. They offer a full information service, maps & guides to help you get the most from your visit. The Tomb of the Unknowns as it is known, but not formally named is impressive and the Sentinels (guards as they are known) are breathtaking to watch as they perfom their guard change ceremony. Find out more about their training and dedication - it is quite belittling I found. Many people are drawn, perhaps, because of the best known person who is buried here. JFK is. His grave is somehow the most simple, unpretentious and moving I have ever visited (for someone I did not know personally). Alongside a few feet away in similar simplicity lies Robert Kennedy. I am not sure if any of the above makes sense to you or will inspire you to visit. But if you do for a quiet hour or two, I am certain you too will be struck by the cemetery that holds such rich history and the resting places of such great individuals. The details are: - ++++++++++++ When? ______ The Arlington National Cemetery opens from 8 a.m. 365 days a year. From April 1 to Sept. 30 the cemetery closes at 7 p.m.; otherwise it closes at 5 p.m. Where _____ Memorial Drive, Washington, 22211 Getting There ___________ Parking is accessible from Memorial Drive and costs $1.25/hour for the first three hours, and $2.00/hour thereafter. Almost all roads that approac
h it have an exit labelled Arlington Cemetary. Or by Metro (clean and wonderful mode of getting around) it has it's own stop - Arlington National Cemetery. As with almost everything official in Washington - entry is FREE of charge!

- 03/03/03 Nice start! Could do with a bit more description and detail though! Have a look around at other opinions! If you add to it I will be happy to come back and reread it.
