I went with managed to find a small stream at the bottom of the dunes, and all hopes of stopping before a splash landing "rapidly" disappeared as I was hurtling towards it. Good fun though. At Cape Reinga itself, is a small white lighthouse alongside one of those touristy signs giving directions and distances to various capital cities. Directly below the lighthouse is the Columbia Bank where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet. Cape Reinga is at the Northern tip of New Zealand on the Aupouri peninsula. I recently made the trip to Cape Reinga, after being talked into it by other travellers who had been and could not believe I was happy to leave it out. I started from my base in the Bay of Islands at Paihia, getting one of the many coach tours on offer. The drive along Ninety Mile Beach (in order to reach Cape Reinga), is a must.
