The son of a British bank clerk who later became president of the Toronto Stock Exchange, Sir Henry Pellatt made his fortune through opportune investments in Northwest Land Co. and the Canadian Pacific Railway as the great Canadian west was opened up to development in the early-1880s. At the age of 20 he installed 32 electric lights in the previously gas-lit centre of Toronto, and followed this up by founding Toronto Niagara Power Company, harnessing the power of Niagara Falls to supply electricity to houses, business and public transport in the city.
