might not be worth the day trip

Chartres Cathedral is a beautiful cathedral, worth seeing for itself, but unfortunately it is the only thing worth seeing in Chartres, which makes it worth the trip only if you really have the time. The building is impressive, architecturally. I am not a huge architecture buff, so I do not remember off the top of my head the details of which Gothic period it belongs to, etc., but as an amateur visitor it was beautiful, and the stained glass was particularly note worthy. I rented an audio tour, which was extensive, and took you through the whole building, its history, the architecture, the building process, etc. My friend who was with me, and is an English teacher in France decided she would take her students there on a field trip and have them answer a quiz after listening to the guide in English, to tell you how informative it was. However, once we were done with the tour, the rest of the town was dead. There were a few cafes open, we had a substandard sandwhich at one, but there really is nothing else to do there.

""The Cathedral of Chartres ("Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres," French: Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres), located in Chartres, about 50 miles (80 km) from Paris, is considered one of the finest examples in all France of the "Gothic" style of architecture. The cathedral is still the seat of the Diocese of Chartres, in the Roman Catholic ecclesiastical province of Tours.""
