Advantages: impressive church

Disadvantages: nothing else to do

Chartres Cathedral is a beautiful cathedral, worth seeing for itself, but unfortunately it is the only thing worth seeing in Chartres, which makes it worth the trip only if you really have the time. The building is impressive, architecturally. I am not a huge architecture buff, so I do not remember off the top of my head the details of which Gothic period it belongs to, etc., but as an amateur visitor it was beautiful, and the stained glass was particularly note worthy. I rented an audio tour, which was extensive, and took you through the whole building, its history, the architecture, the building process, etc. My friend who was with me, and is an English teacher in France decided she would take her students there on a field trip and have them answer a quiz after listening to the guide in English, to tell you how informative it was. However, once we were done with the tour, the rest of the town was dead. There were a few cafes open, we had a substandard sandwhich at one, but there really is nothing else to do there.

Summary: might not be worth the day trip

I think we spent about 2.5 hours in the Cathedral, but as I recall the audio tour was about 1.5 hours. Hence, its a bit far for a day trip to just do 2ish hours in the church, since there is nothing else around.

Only slightly useful, I'm afraid. Any more detail you could add? How much was it to use the audio tour? How long should you set aside to do it justice?
