Château d'Angers (Angers, France) ... encompass 6.17 acres (25,000 m²). In 1352, King Jean II (le Bon), gave the château to his son, Louis I. Married to the daughter of the wealthy Duke of Brittany, Louis had the château modified, and in 1373 commissioned the famous Apocalypse Tapestry from the painter Hennequin de Bruges and the Parisian tapestry-weaver Nicolas Bataille.

I lived near Angers (France) for a long time and had visited this castle years ago. Recently, I made another visit and enjoyed it very much indeed. ~The exterior~ ************** This is by far the most impressive and unusual aspect of the Chateau. Situated by the river Maine (the Loire doesn't actually cross Angers), the Chateau dominates the surrounding town-scape with its ponderous black and white towers. These are very remarkable. Unlike other castles in the area which are mostly residential, this was very much meant as a fortified fort, as witnessed by its 17 towers, its thick walls (up to 3 metres) and minimal openings.
