Cueva de los Verdes (Green's Caves) ... enormous lava stream flowed over the Malpais de la Corona. For a long time, the lava stream flowed which left the top part to become a cave. In about 20 spots, the cover of the cave collapsed and formed. Cueva de los Verdes is formed from parts of the volcanic soils and extends from 1 km to 6 kilometres of old lava streams. The streams are the second longest in the world.

THE GREEN CAVES ----------------------------- The Green Caves were formed over 3000 years ago on the North East coast of Lanzarote. They were formed during the eruptions of the Corona Volcano. The caves are situated on the North cost of the island. The caves are apart of the Atlantida underground system. The caves are known locally as Cueva de los Verdes. The original inhabitants of the island were known as the Guanches and they would shelter in the caves from the pirates and slave hunters that threatened the island. The caves are situated at the North of the Island and are easy to find by car, they are also included in many of the day tours available - you will be given daily leaflets on all tours if you walk anywhere in Lanzarote! The name is not what it seems! These caves are not green! They take their name from one of the families called Verdes who used to hide in there trying to escape from pirates. Pirates would often not just rape and pilage but take families to sell on for slavery.
