Advantages: Cheap

Disadvantages: bit run down, but ok

Well don't mention it if you're half way up the Eiffel Tower, that's my advice. My boyfriend did this infront of a load of elderly english tourists, and it was very embarassing!

My (then) boyfriend and I went to Paris a couple of years ago, and decided to do it as cheaply as possible, and see as much as we could.

Typical students.

So, first stop, The Eiffel Tower.

Now, I'd been up it before, but my boyfriend hadn't, and was really excited about it. In a mad moment of not having-much-money and crazed youthfullness, we decided that we'd walk as far as we could.

I must stress that when you see the Eiffel Tower from the top of the hill behind it, it doesn't look too huge, and walking up seems a viable option, but as you approach the heap of metal at the bottom of the hill, it very certainly ISN'T a walk in the park at all.

But we did it, and it saved us a lot of money.

Walking wasn't too much of a nightmare, and it was rather nice to stop at each level to admire the view as it unfolded. We decided that we'd really appreciate it when we got to the top (which is only reachable via lift from the second stage), we wouldn't regret our madness.

And we didn't.

The stairs aren't the most beautiful of things, but having been in the lifts too, I have to say that they aren't fantastic either. On each level there's a little cafe and a shop, which, to be honest, seems rather like a motorway cafe. But you don't go up it for the sophisticated food and drink do you?

At the top, it's very cramped, especially if you go at a busy time, like we did, but the view is fantastic, and there are little diagrams on the walls to tell you what you're looking at etc. It's very outdated now, but it serves the purpose, and after all, you are just there for the view.

for anyone who's scared of heights (unlike me), I would
stress how much more you get out of the top level as compared to the lower two. The top is nearly the same height from the middle level as the middle level is off the ground, and the view is soooooo much better from the top. Plus, there's glass and wire mesh to protect you!

Apparently the view is fantastic if you go up at night-time, although I've never been.

All in all, it's a must really if you go to Paris, but don't expect fantastic "extras" as there really aren't any. Still, the view really is great.

I've never been to Paris, never the up the Eiffel Tower! But, I must admit, it sounds a wonderful experience!

Sex and towers! I *get* it! I saw the eiffel once but I was only a small child, and I complained about it being too small - travel is wasted on the young! Cheers, Karen

Maybe it was the phallic-ness that set him off? Zoë
