the largest botanical gardens in europe (they claim...)you could spend all day there. situated in ses salines, around 40km south east of palma, driving in the direction llucmajor, campos, ses salines (via santanyi)
since 1989, when the construction of these truly spectacular botanical gardens began, it has "grown" bigger & bigger every year. in total it occupies over 150,000m2.
it has been beautifully lanscaped, with pathways leading you through bamboo groves & palm trees, where the calls of the parrots & peacocks add to a truly tropical experience.
amongst other things you'll find a lake, covering around 10,000m2, with a bridge leading to an island of date palms. there's also a garden dedicated to trees & plants native to mallorca such as the carob, almond and orange trees, rustling in the gentle breeze generated of course by a windmill (nothing more typical of mallorca!)
the actual cacti gardens are totally breathtaking. comprising of over 40,000m2 of undulating`desert´and rock, alive with an incredible collection of over 12,000 cacti, from more than 400 different species. ranging from the typical malloquin cactus, to the "carnegie giant" from arizona, having more than 300 years of age. obviously, dependent upon which time of year you visit, you'll find more, or less in flower, which only adds to the spectacle.
cactifanatico or no, an underadvertised, nature packed, gem of a day out...
