Advantages: Looking all across New York
Disadvantages: Very windy!
The Empire State Building is what everyne wants to do when you go to New York and believe me I was no different.
The Empire State Building is located on 35th Street 5th Avenue (After you've been there a while you get used to the way streets/avenue are planned out!). It dominates the skyline of New York and is impressive as you approach it and look at how high it reaches into the sky. I didn't even realise how tall it would be as the first time we were going to go to the top we were dissapointed as it was a foggy day, and half of the Empire State building seemed to have dissapeared into the fog, therefore we decided to leave it until the following day when it was clear.
Walking through the lobby and instantly I recognised it from films I had seen (If you've ever watched sleepless in seatle then it is exactly like that!). You then go up some esculators and begin queing up to go through the airport style security, this means bags through scanners, and walking through metal detectors.
After this you will then queue to get to the ticket desk, although when we got here it was a very long queue we were surprised at how quick we got to the front.
However dont think that just because you now have your ticket your free to carry on up..oh no there are sadly more queues, only this time its for the lift.
Once your in the lift, it'll take you upto the 80th floor were no doubt you will step out and think at last I'm here (as we had been queing now for over an hour) Yet again we were asked to queue as there was another lift we would have to wait for to take us to the 86th floor where the observatory was. This queue however is substanially shorter then the ones you are in before and this time once you step outside the lift you are there.
Stepping outside and you are hit by the cold (I suppose this depends on time of year you go, we went in December) and the wind. Now this wind is like none I have ever experienced! Its so windy it's like you lose your breath you can almost feel it wanting to lift you off your feet. However you may find like us this is only on one side of the building, and after walking to the other side although it is still windy its not half as bad as it was!
Looking out across New York was amazing and was worth the two hours we had been queuing to get to the top. It was an amazing clear day and would advise anyone who is going to do this to wait until it is clear if possible as we could see all across New York, and could even see the statue of liberty from it.
What I found most amazing was looking down from the top, when your at the bottom although the empire state does dominate the skyline the other skyscrapers are still doing that scraping the sky, however from the top you'll be amazed at how much taller the empire state is compared to the rest as all seem to only come halfway up the empuire state and looking down they look almost like houses!
If you ever go to New York go and do this the views you will get will honestly take your breath away, everything I saw from the top is etched in my mind and Im glad I've got them memories for the rest of my life.
Summary: A must do in New York!
