Ever since the creation of the FBI - it has been one of America's best know and most talked about institutions.

The FBI building itself is not the most attractive in the world. But, it houses some of the most far reaching and

I took the tour several years back and thoroughly enjoyed it. It last around an hour and provides a good insight into how the FBI was formed, its responsibilities and achievements

It is true that this is not an independent and impartial tour pointing out the failings and flaws of the FBI. Equally, in true American spirit, eventually they don't hide to much from the reality that sometimes th
ey have failed to live up to what their nation expects from them.

I didn't get to meet anyone who looked remotely like Clarisse Starling or who asked if I had seen a fugitive - but then the real agents are hopefully out in the field doing serious work and not impersonating Hollywood best.

But the tour does end with a real and live firearms demonstration - beat that Hollywood!

IMPORTANT - I did check out the website and it suggests that tours are currently not on offer due to extensive renovations. I could not prove if this was current news - so please check before you go.

Their website suggest you can call for periodic updates on the status on (202) 324-3447.

And watch out for the fact it did only open Mondays till Fridays with the last tour at 2.30pm.

Finally, Americans seem to love to do this kind of thing during their bank holiday weekends and vacations - so watch out for how busy this can get at the "wrong" times of year.
