Another fort worth missing out on (Fort VIII Sluzew (Warsaw, Poland))

Whilst not quite as dreary and unwanted as Fort Pilsudskiego, Fort Sluzew also known as VIII is another one of the forts that shouldn't be particularly high on someones list of places to visit in Warsaw.

When it comes to the forts of the south - the most recommended one is probably Fort Czerniakow due to its awesome free museum. Fort Sluzew has nothing to offer the visitor other than its unique (well apart from the same atmosphere at the other forts of the city) aura, where there is a similar feeling to the closed down factories of an industrial city.

Fort Sluzew's walls are in tact and are one of the better examples as are the barracks, there's less of the dark and gloomy underground rooms that are in copious numbers at most of the other forts though and there's not as much litter strewn around as at Fort Pilsudskiego, it also doesn't feel quite as detached from the outside world because some nearby housing blends in reasonably well.

The fort is not really necessary anymore and its a long way back to its glory days, its last major use was housing the German enemies horses during WW2. As a sight on its own, I'd be tempted to give this a 3/5 but because of its awkward location, it's back down to a 2/5. If you combined it with a visit to the racecourse, Kabaty forest or the nearby Dolina Sluzewiecka then it may just be worth visiting the 19th century fortifications. The easiest way is to wander through Dolina Sluzewiecka from Metro Ursynow.
