Advantages: Lots of rail links, incredibly designed

Disadvantages: Lots of people

Grand Central Station in New York City is no ordinary train station.

Don't get me wrong, it is definitely a major hub of New York's train network but it is also so much more than that.

I visited in February 2007 on the last day of my holiday in New York and we had a few hours to kill before going back to the airport for the flight home.

As well as the train platforms and subway connections it has a main concourse area with marble floors, huge windows and decorative lighting in the form of chandeliers. The station was renovated and restored beginning in 1996 and now it is definitely a tourist attraction in it's own right, you can even take a guided tour. I loved that it is a throwback to the 1920's and earlier and such a lot of care has been taken in restoring this station to it's former glory.

There are shops (including a Banana Republic and Swatch outlet), an enormous food hall as well as it's own indoor market selling gourmet foods. While we were there it was also hosting the Bear Stearns Tournament of Champions Squash 2007 in the Vanderbilt Hall area.

If you are arriving to, or leaving New York from this train terminal then you are definitely doing so in style.

Summary: Wonderful place, definitely worth a look
