Advantages: Full of character, pretty streets, good shops and cafes

Greenwich Village, also known as simply 'the Village' is on the lower west side of southern Manhattan. It was the bohemian haven in the late 19th to early 20th centuries and was the place where off-off-Broadway began. The Village has been the home to many writers, artists and musicians including Bob Dylan and Dylan Thomas. It was also the place where icons such as Barbara Streisand, Simon and Garfunkel and Jimi Hendrix got a start. It is now a popular gay district and as you walk down the small old-fashioned lanes it's a bit of a shock when suddenly there's a very adult shop right in front of you!

You can find a few famous TV sets in the Village such as Carrie Bradshaw's front door step from Sex and The City and Rachel and Monica's apartment building and Ross's apartment building from Friends.

The cobbled streets and pretty row houses are home to mainly upper middle class families and have some of the most expensive streets in Manhattan to live in. At night the Village comes alive with its theatres, clubs and cafes and has a character of its own. It's a great place to do some shoe shopping and some shopping in the unique boutique shops, and to go out for something to eat. Visit Gray's Papaya, famous for its hot dogs and smoothies.

It's a very unique place and definitely worth a visit, even just for a quick stop to see the pretty lanes.
